I do hold a president to a higher standard regarding knowledge of history over mispronunciation of words. Shouldn't everybody?
You can fairly bitch about his use of the English language but his knowledge of history has nothing to do it at all....
Frederick Douglass as "an example of somebody who has done an amazing job and is being recognized more and more"
"Has done", implies something in the past to me....and implies nothing about Douglass being dead or alive....
and the 'is being recognized' obviously speaks to how people today perceived Douglass's past deeds....
Could different words be used? of course....
had done, has done, did, ...its all the same thing.
