2017 Isn't '1984'—It's Stranger Than Orwell Imagined

Well it looks like that whole show if you putting me on ignore didn't last very long did it Toby?

As to your post. Are you implying that 1984 was written to extol the virtues of socialism?

Yeah yeah, lots of people think this utopia of "democratic socialism" is a beautiful thing as if voting to take another's property imparts some sort of morality on an immoral act.

Putting you on Ignore must have been an oversight on my part you ignorant bitch.

I don't give a rats ass about what you think of democratic socialism, liberals, 1984, or anything else.

My post to your ignorant ass was to demonstrate that you don't know what the fuck you're talking about .. you didn't even know that Orwell was a socialist.

Was 1984 about socialism? :0) YES, you stupid motherfucker. It's decidedly anti-fascist, specifically Russian fascism, and speaks to workers being lied to by the totalitarian state.

Right over your head.

"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written directly or indirectly against totalitarianism and for Democratic Socialism as I understand it." -- George Orwell. 1984 was published in 1949.

He was decidedly left-wing .. but an idiot like you believes that the Left has never read it. :0) It's celebrated by the Left you fucking clown.

I guess Runeberg is deferring the kick-off so I'll get it started.

Conventional Wisdom says that Animal Farm is an allegory for the Russian Revolution. What say you?

This is open to anyone not just that pussy Rune.

What is there to argue about, bitch Gully?

"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others"

For instance - the Hillbag

BTW, to everyone, my trolling is suspended in this thread. No insults, no smart ass comments. I'm actually interested in this so no bullshit behavior from me in this thread. You have the Guille guarantee.

Absolutely. Obviously this didn't happen in WWI Russia. What's your take on Animal Farm?

Socialist Workers parties replace one dictator with another.

And let me say, that in 1936, Hitler was viewed as a Socialist Progressive Hero of epic proportions.

Yes, he was. And you're right about the workers. 10,000 guys with some power or one guy with a lot of power. Either way, you're a shark or a minnow.

Soviet mean "workers council' ... and we know how that worked out.

In Orwell’s Oceania, there is no freedom to speak facts except those that are official. In 2017 America, at least among many of the powerful minority who selected its president, the more official the fact, the more dubious. For Winston, “Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four.” For this powerful minority, freedom is the freedom to say two plus two make five.
For a bunch of idiots who think they have "no freedom to speak facts except those that are official", you sure seem willing to flap your gums in public. Shouldn't you shut the hell up and hide from the thought police?

See, I'm more focused on Western Europe. I think Animal Farm was about Spain, not Russia, no matter what Orwell thought he was writing about.

Spain was where he experienced his war. I'm sure it was a great influence. And you may very well be correct.

I think Orwell nailed human nature right on the head. He just had blinders on when it came to democratic socialism. He basically hated the Stalinists for disagreeing with him. How dare anyone disagree with him! Smart and stupid at the same time.

I read it more as an example of how, at the base level, people will always do what's best FOR THEM.
