Federal prosecutors say most of the approximately 230 protesters arrested on Inauguration Day will be charged with felony rioting.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says the offense is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. The people who were arrested are appearing in court on Saturday in Washington.

The office says most of those arrested will be released without having to post bail and must return to court in February.

The arrests took place in a four-block stretch of downtown Washington around the time of President Donald Trump's swearing-in ceremony.

Good. About time. Big difference between a peaceful protest and rioting. Glad to see someone knows the difference finally.

this is very difficult. On the one hand the law, passed in Obama's term, is very clear. You riot in a city with active secret service protection then it automatically is upgraded to this charge. On the other hand your not going to get a conviction. What is a prosecutor to do?

Ironic that Obama signed the law that got his supporters charged with felonies. Recalls to mind Harry Reid's nuclear option.

This is good news. Hope they do their best to actually identify those that were actually rioting as opposed to those that those protesters that got caught up in any sweeps. It will take time and there will most likely be a class action suit by lawyers who do only that. But they did confiscate cell phones so hopefully they can trace and link back to the organizers of the riots and hammer them hard and the people funding those organizers no matter how high it goes; that would be fun and awesome.
