MEDIA ALERT: President Obama Farewell Speech Tuesday Jan. 10, 2017 9:PM/ET

PBS is scheduled to broadcast it. Others may too.

a) Will you watch?

b) If not, why not?

c) If so, what will you look for?

I'm guessing Obama may appeal for a blitz on congress to save ACA:
- send letters
- tweet
- e-mail
- telephone

What else would he want to say? Boast his accomplishments?

I plan to watch and text with my Alaskan chicks, we are scattered now due to retirement, we use to do it at someone's home, at Bush's, we toasted a lot!

I look for him to get sentimental and like you think he will appeal to us to be activists.

He will be gracious and thank us, the military and his family.

I think he will warn us about Russia.

I hope he gets in preacher mode, it's when I enjoy his orating the most.

"I think he will warn us about Russia."

That's a particularly interesting one, on multiple levels.

I'm not sure Obama would want to leave any useful tips that would make the Trump administration successful. That's a reason Obama might want to keep quiet on it.

BUT !!

The Trump / Putin bromance is quite alarming. Romney was right, if not prescient, about the peril Russia posed. Romney took that position before the annexation of Crimea, or Russian military operations joining Assad in Syria.

Thanks for mentioning that QS. I'll now be looking for that too.

I predict more of his self congratulatory arrogance. His divisive politics can of course never be set aside, so I expect he'll load up a few parting swipes. They'll of course be couched in bitter, but not very cleverly cloaked digs at those who are happy his tenure is finally over.

Godd riddance.

He'll blame Bush lol. Not kidding, just watch.

He'll say 'I' a whole bunch.

He won't take responsibility for anything, including the fact his party has been decimated by his policies for nearly a decade.

Unbelievably, and in utter defiance of brute reality, he'll take credit for improving race relations.

But he's a great orator. Just ignore what's he's saying, focus on the delivery and it'll be worth watching.

"he already gave his farewell press conference..we're done here." a #4

President of the United States of America Barack Husein Obama was twice elected to the office.
That constitutes explicit confidence in him by the people that put him in office.

If you have contempt for our president that has worked so hard for our People, then you have contempt for our People as well.

It may be of no interest to you.

"I predict more of his self congratulatory arrogance." JC #5

Press teases of tonight's speech report that rather than a narcissistic laundry list of Obama administration past accomplishments, Obama intends to offer a perspective on the future.
He wouldn't be the first to do so.

President Eisenhower, former Supreme Allied Commander in WWII gave a similar speech, and included a warning about the military-industrial complex. Prescient.

It was a warning we should have heeded. Are you aware that the U.S. not only spends more on military than any other NATO member nation? But that we ALSO spend more on military than all the other NATO member nations COMBINED?

Thus such post-presidency speech can be worth hearing. I won't know whether or not, until after I hear it.

BUT !!

It's worth noting that several FCC approved broadcast networks including radio and television have preempted their broadcast schedule for it. So at the editorial level, by out nation's top professionals in such decisions, it's broadcast content more worthwhile than the preempted material.

"Godd riddance." JC #5

Freudiann penis.

I have no interest in hearing from him further. I don't like his executive actions substitutiong for legislation in the 2nd term.
In fact i'm not at all impressed with his 2nd term. Libya marred his first term. I give him credit for Obamacare -but no credit for not pushing single pay.

I will try and listen to it (weather permitting). I think by this speech one will be able to discern what his plans are for a possible political future. Will he ride off into the sunset or will there be a hint of future political activism. Worth watching or listening too.

Is there an echo in here?

" I don't like his executive actions substitutiong for legislation in the 2nd term. " a #8

But is not the first president to do so. I don't recall you complaining about "executive actions" when Bush was in office.

Regarding your line #2:

Obama is a practical man.

Would you have preferred that he failed entirely on it, as the Clinton's did?
It's not what Obama wanted.

BUT !!

"Politics is the art of compromise." Obama got the best he could. That's a principle no less a personage than Benjamin Franklin commented on.

btw:
In politics it's called a "toe in the door".
The plan was to get the ACA toe in the door, and then have, during the course of her 8 year term, have President Clinton enhance and expand, and refine it.
Clearly, though that APPEARED to be where we were headed, until election night we had no plausible indication it would NOT be that way.

Hillary dropped the ball. You gunna blame Obama for that? He did what he could to help her, including hire her into his cabinet, AND campaign for her. She lost anyway.

*look he abandoned any attempts at legislation - yet wanted to do big things in terms of DARPA in immigration.
SCOTUS -which rarely intervenes in separation of powers issues did so because of a TX lawsuit,
and shot him down or that would have stood.

He was way ideological. His DoJ under Holder was highly politicized.
These are process and Constitutional issues of importance surpassing temporal politics.

I suppose he could run for the Senate but I can't see that happening, so I doubt Obama will have a political future, per se.

But!

Given his narcissistic tendencies, I can't imagine him riding off into the sunset, either. Obama will most likely take a seat on the sidelines from whence he will 'weigh-in' on the hot topics; particularly, those having to do with his legacy.

Which is going to make it difficult for his party to evolve and/or cultivate some much needed youthful leadership. For the supposed party of diversity, the democrats are top heavy with old white people in leadership positions.

It's ironic that a black man would stand in the way of that happening.

However unwittingly.

"Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency *" & immigration? Like what?

President ("I earned capital in the campaign, political capital. And now I intend to spend it." U.S. President Bush (younger) November 4, 2004) Bush?
He put a lot of effort into immigration reform, and got squat.

President Elect Trump says he will both build a wall, and deport all illegal aliens.

And Obama's the one you complain about?

"These are process and Constitutional issues of importance surpassing temporal politics." a #11

But even if true, they're just one side of the coin.

Should devout Christians dump Jesus because of the money-changer kerfuffle?

"I suppose he could run for the Senate but I can't see that happening" DO

There's precedent.

"Given his narcissistic tendencies"

a) The only U.S. president I can think of that didn't have some significant level of narcissistic tendency was Ford.

BUT !!

Ford is the only one I can think of that hadn't at that point ever run or the office. Ford became VP when Agnew was flushed out by scandal,
and then got promoted by the Constitution when President Richard ("I am not a crook") Nixon resigned in disgrace.

Anyone beyond the 19th Century that runs for POTUS has some level of narcissism.
There's more to it than that.

And as this is reportedly Obama's last speech as president, it's likely (if as narcissistic as you assert) he'll want it to be a speech he'll be remembered by.
Thus it would be self-defeating for him to deliver a clunker.

"Given his narcissistic tendencies"

Youth may be a greater factor. He's not an empty-nester yet, he's still got a kid in high school.

Obama is young, fit, smart, broadly experienced, and young enough to begin a whole new career. What law firm wouldn't love to have him on their roster?

He's enrolled at Trump University.....

hes not leaving hes just not going to be president anymore

you will of course blame him for EVERY trumpy fail for two years until the clown is impeached

"like Hillary, he will be quickly forgotten..." by some.

Have you entirely forgotten how audiences SWOON with admiration when we invoke the name Zackary Taylor ?!
