Record 95,102,000 Americans Not in Labor Force; Number Grew 18% Since Obama Took Offi

Enjoying the view
Barack Obama's presidency began with a record number of Americans not in the labor force, and it's ending the same way.

The final jobs report of the Obama presidency, released Friday, shows that the number of Americans not in the labor force has increased by 14,573,000 (18.09 percent) since January 2009, when Obama took office, continuing a long-term trend that began well before Obama was sworn in.

In December, according to the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, a record 95,102,000 Americans were not in the labor force, 47,000 more than in November; and the labor force participation rate was 62.7 percent, a tenth of a point higher than in November.

The participation rate dropped to a 38-year low of 62.4 percent on Obama's watch, in September 2015. It was only 3-tenths of a point higher than that last month.

I don't recognize the source. "cns"?
In any case the figure I recall most recently reading on it was an unemployment rate of 4.7%.

We KNOW that figure underestimates the true number.

BUT !!

It's the standard applied to both Democrat, and Republican administrations.

Therefore we can deduce:

- if the % unemployed is dropping, yet

- the raw # unemployed is increasing, that means

our population / total potential labor force is increasing; only not fast enough to hold steady, or increase the "unemployment rate" or % unemployed.

Some have called Obama's economic recovery from the Bush / Cheney / Paulson recession lackluster. But at least it passes the Reagan standard.

“... Reince Priebus, the Republican National Chairman today said that 300K jobs ... aught to be expected every month ... and just a historical perspective:
- during the 8 years of President Bush (younger) there were 2.1 million net jobs created in the United States. Of the 2.1 million, 1.8 million of them were in the public sector ... that means there were 300,000 jobs in the private sector in 8 months, in 8 years rather, net ...
more jobs have been created in the United States in the last 4 years than in Europe, Japan, all the industrialized modern world combined. ...
70 years since WWII. 36 years of Republican presidents, 34 years of Democratic presidents. In those 70 years, there were 36.7 million jobs created under Republican presidents ... a little over half the time. In 34 years there were 63.7 million created by Democrats. That's 29 million more. You know, perhaps it's an accident once, or twice or what. But I mean at some point the Democrats ought to be comfort in the fact that they have been better the economy and job creation than have been the opposition.
...
It's 15 years since we've had 10 consecutive months of over 200,000 [job growth]. Just 15 years ago there was a fella from Arkansas ... there were more jobs created in Bill Clinton's 8 years than there were in Ronald Reagan's 8 years, and the 12 years of both Bush's combined. I mean 6 million more jobs created in those 8 years, ... policy does kick in, & is reflected in the results.” Mark Shields

now go back and look at disability enrollment and welfare, both have tripled under Obama and one gets a real picture of what is really happening. The democrats have been building a dependent class which would increase their base. It was a hell of a plan but the working class was not ready to fold.

Baby boomers started retiring in 2011 at about 10,000/day. Was that factored into the statistics?

according to senator sanders 50% of those that retire do so with 0 savings. It is likely they still want to work but are not counted.

What no one says is these guys out of the labor force still need to eat and live so they are supported by their working family members who have not seen a raise in a while.

Yep, millenials have been tricked into paying for all the old farts.

I believe the original ratio was 15 workers for 1 SS recipient. Now it's 2 workers to pay for 1 old fart that's going to be on the dole for 30 years.

Soylent green. It is the only solution.

The point of the thread was the dropping number in the work force, not their savings or their support.

Noticeable how job completely ignored his question, shocking

"now go back and look at disability enrollment" dd #5

Proof that ACA is working?

"The democrats have been building a dependent class which would increase their base." dd

I've been pounding that drum for decades.
But let's not blame only the Democrats. President Elect Trump has not only promised to get rid of ACA. He's also promised to replace it with something much better.

Republican Presidential candidate former TX Governor George Bush "ran in 2000 promising to strengthen Social Security, the emblematic achievement of the New Deal, promising to enrich the entitlement menu of Medicare, the emblematic achievement of the Great Society. He has increased education spending and the federal involvement in education. He is the President who has increased the welfare state more than any President since 1965. Bill Clinton is the only modern President to repeal an entitlement program with the signing of welfare reform act. I do think the labels are considerably blurred." George Will / ABC-TV This Week

You demonizing Democrats may give you the warm fuzzies. The reality is substantially more grim than that. NEITHER party can be relied upon to provide genuine conservative governance.

And if Trump makes good on his promises, both cutting spending and skyrocketing military spending, including nukes ($expensive), it's likely to grotesquely expand our already insanely high U.S. federal debt.

yes, but it does not account for those getting on disability in their 20's, 30's, and up because it is so much easier to do so and one is allowed to work and make money on top of that
