Larry Smith is a former cop who lives in South Dakota. He’s had Parkinson’s for 20 years, which gives him symptoms including severe dyskinesia (uncontrolled movements), loss of voice and tremors. This clip from Ride With Larry, a documentary about him and his extraordinary efforts to address his illness and raise awareness, has gone viral on social media—and it’s easy to see why.

This article was originally published by The Influence, a news site that covers the full spectrum of human relationships with drugs. Follow The Influence on Facebook or Twitter.

Smith is shown taking medical marijuana for the first time—it is still not legally available in South Dakota. After he puts a drop of cannabis oil under his tongue, the unedited, sped-up film shows the rapid change he undergoes. His involuntary movements end, his hands are steady and he can speak normally.:awesome:

Dr. Daniele Piomelli of UC, Irvine explains what we know about the science of what’s going on, as well as frustrations about the political obstacles to wider study and use of medical marijuana. For many, the sight of this dramatic positive change in a person with this debilitating disease will speak louder than words.

Truly amazing indeed.

More than any president in American history, Obama should have been at the forefront of this.

Sadly, he wasn't.

give him some credit for the Ogden memo. Congress is the root cause of all Schedule drug evils.
The real winner was federalism -the states were the "laboratories of democracy" (Justice Louis Brandeis) that reflected the will of the people

He is not alone...I don't believe any previous president has foreseen the medical benefits of the weed....of course its only recently that

the medical uses are coming to light in a big way.....More and more states are passing laws that allow people to use medical marijuana today.

Ogden / Cole Memo notwithstanding, there were more busts for medical marijuaba in the first Obama term than in the two previous terms of the Bush administration.

Should I give him credit for that?

White House: Obama doesn’t favor medical marijuana ‘at this point’

True, but more than any president, Obama knew first hand that marijuana is not the evil drug it's made out to be.

He knew that one could smoke mountains of weed .. and go on to graduate from Harvard and become President of the United States.

At the very least he should have ordered more research on the benefits of medical marijuana.

About 19 or 20 states have it with another 12 or so having laws pending......thats the good news....

There will always be problems with how it gets regulated and used....

the two main issues are that the feds brainwashed an idiot populace with 'reefer madness' and that later generations aren't being taught that they are the true power in the country, thus allowing themselves to nullify federal law.

Cannabidiol doesn't have the psychotropic effects of tetrahydrocannabinol.

Over here sadly the majority of the dope sold on the streets is actually skunk, an incredibly potent form very high in THC developed first in Holland. It is this more than any other reason why there has been such an increase in schizophrenia and psychosis in the young.

True .. but analogous to the liquor being sold to the public during prohibition. It was damn near poison in a bottle.

States that had legalized find a far better quality of weed available to the public.

skunk is worldwide. It's just another term for high test weed ..weed does NOT "cause either psychosis or schizophrenia"
It can aggrrevate underlying conditions and manifest as psychotic like behavior/thought ..

On cannabinoids:
https://www.medicaljane.com/2013/08/19/cannabinol-cbn-will-put-you-to-bed/

When we look at the construction of cannabis, we find that it has over 80 cannabinoids. Until recently, tetrahydrocannbinol (THC) was the only cannabinoid anyone seemed to care about. Thankfully recent research, particularly about cannabidiol (CBD), has brought about an intense interest in all the cannabinoids.
As is the case in many of the known cannabinoids, cannabinol (CBN) stems from cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) in cannabis. The plant naturally produces enzymes (aka synthases) that convert the CBGA to one of 3 major cannabinoids: cannabichromene carboxylic acid (CBCA), cannabidiol carboxylic acid (CBDA), and tetrahydrocannabinol carboxylic acid (THCA).

When the plant develops THCA, it usually will be converted to THC as a result of heat or UV light. That being said, THCA can be converted to CBNA over time as well. Prolonged exposure to air causes the THCA to lose hydrogen molecules and oxidize; now we have CBNA. Just like the rest of the acidic cannabinoids, CBNA will convert to cannabinol (CBN) when exposed to heat or UV light.
What Are The Benefits Of Cannabinol (CBN)?

Cannabis is widely used as a sleep-aid for those who suffer from insomnia and cannabinol is the reason why. By all accounts, CBN is the cannabinoid responsible for the sedative effects of cannabis. Because of this, I tend to reserve high-CBN strains for night use.

Another use for cannabinol as an anti-bacterial. According to a Italian study from 2008, cannabinol “showed potent activity against MRSA” when applied as a topical. Topical uses also have shown promise in treating burns and psoriasis.

The research on cannabinol (CBN) is still lacking, but some early studies have suggested it could stimulate bone growth. If that’s the case, it would be helpful in treating osteoporosis. It could also help those with broken bones to recover more quickly.
Cannabinol Can Reflect The Age Of Your Cannabis

When searching for the perfect strain, it’s important to know what you’re getting. This is why lab-testing should never be overlooked. Testing facilities like Steep Hill Lab in California give patients a complete cannabinoid profile of their medicine. It’s always a good idea to check a strains profile before making a decision.

Because cannabinol is a production of degradation, it’s not usually found in high concentrations (in a collective). High levels of CBN are usually related to poor storage methods. If cannabis is stored in an airtight container of some sort, it’s unlikely that a lot of THC would convert to CBN.

Luckily, not all is lost if you’re searching your collective for a sleep-aid. The simple solution would be to allow you’re medicine to age a bit. When exposed to the air, the THC will begin to degrade and convert to CBN, a great way to fight insomnia.

I have noticed that over the last year or so many that smoke reek of of skunky weed............ I have rarely noticed it this before, & never this bad?? wtf??

The notion that one drug is ideal for all patients is illusory. Antibiotics for example can reliably cure some infections. But even that's no longer a truism.

Marijuana may help some, and not others.

The question is:
should the government have the authority to prevent citizens from trying an OTC / herbal remedy, and simply see if it helps or not?

Many may think, in the case of marijuana, it should not.

But reductio ad absurdum.
If we handle marijuana laissez-faire, and even if the benefit for some patients is mainly placebo; should the government also be laissez-faire about other drugs not FDA approved, with dubious therapeutic credentials, like laetrile?

Shall we indulge any snake-oil salesman trying to pass cheap cooking oil (or water, or ethanol) off as a cure-all:
- impotence
- cancer
- heart disease
- & everything else?
