Lessig offers free help to electors wanting to vote against Trump: report

Prominent Harvard law professor Larry Lessig says he will partner with a California-based law firm to help any members of the Electoral College looking to oppose President-elect Donald Trump, Politico reports.

Lessig said "The Electors Trust" will provide free legal help to electors looking to vote against Trump, but who may live in states where that may be illegal.
The group will also help electors strategize and coordinate to determine whether they have enough support to stop a Trump presidency.

"It makes no sense to be elector number five who comes out against Trump, but it might make sense to be elector 38," Lessig told Politico.

On Monday evening, a Republican elector from Texas announced in a New York Times op-ed that he would vote against Trump when the Electoral College casts its official vote for president Dec. 19.

The constitutionality of state pledge laws was confirmed by the Supreme Court in 1952 in Ray v. Blair in a 5–2 vote. The court ruled states have the right to require electors to pledge to vote for the candidate whom their party supports, and the right to remove potential electors who refuse to pledge prior to the election.
