Stephen Hawking Issues DIRE Warning To The World On Trump Presidency

Malarkeyville

Stephen Hawking is one of the most renowned and accomplished living scientists. And he has issued a dire warning about what Trump will mean not only for the USA but also for the entire world.
The Most Dangerous Moment

In response to Trump’s election, Hawking wrote an article for The Guardian titled “This Is The Most Dangerous Time For Our Planet.” He addresses the scientific community’s concerns about environmental devastation and climate change:

“We face awesome environmental challenges: climate change, food production, overpopulation, the decimation of other species, epidemic disease, acidification of the oceans.”

Trump, of course, has repeatedly denied the reality of climate change. He already has plans in place to dismantle many of the Obama administration’s accomplishments on climate issues.

Hawking expanded beyond this strictly scientific purview, however. In addition, he spoke about the many people who struggle under desperate material and economic conditions:

“The automation of factories has already decimated jobs in traditional manufacturing, and the rise of artificial intelligence is likely to extend this job destruction deep into the middle classes, with only the most caring, creative or supervisory roles remaining. This, in turn, will accelerate the already widening economic inequality around the world. The internet and the platforms that it makes possible allow very small groups of individuals to make enormous profits while employing very few people. This is inevitable: it is progress, but it is also socially destructive.”

Interestingly enough, Hawking is acknowledging that scientific and technological achievements aren’t always good for many people. Advancements that could be liberating are instead creating precarious conditions for the working and middle classes by automating many of their jobs.

He also notes that similar conditions and sentiments led to Brexit. And he recognizes which side of the intellectual and class divide he sits on, and what that means for the future:

“So the recent apparent rejection of the elites in both America and Britain is surely aimed at me, as much as anyone…It was, everyone seems to agree, the moment when the forgotten spoke, finding their voices to reject the advice and guidance of experts and the elite everywhere.”
A Call To Unity

In response to this populist rejection of the elite, Hawking says that humanity must find a way to come together. Indeed, the future of our species and our very planet depend on it. He says that it would be “a terrible mistake” to turn our backs on everyone in these populist movements:

“For me, the really concerning aspect of this is that now, more than at any time in our history, our species needs to work together…[W]e are at the most dangerous moment in the development of humanity. We now have the technology to destroy the planet on which we live, but have not yet developed the ability to escape it.”

He offers a clear call to action for leaders in the political, intellectual, and cultural realms:

“If we are to stand a chance of doing that, the world’s leaders need to acknowledge that they have failed and are failing the many…We can do this; I am an enormous optimist for my species; but it will require the elites, from London to Harvard, from Cambridge to Hollywood, to learn the lessons of the past year. To learn above all a measure of humility.”

Hawking is hardly a doofus.

Lol...thank you, Rana. That's the very reason I posted that. I knew someone would respond that way. Of course I don't think he's a doofus. I do, however, think he's like a lot of the elites and has no clue how most people think and live their lives.

You are right, he has no idea how most people live their lives having been confined to a wheelchair and unable to speak, except through artificial means.

How most common ppl think & live has what to do w/ them electing a demagogue??

Rana, you're smarter than that. I wasn't referring to Mr. Hawking's physical confinement.

If you are using the secondary definition of the word as it applied to Ancient Greece and Rome, everything.

dem·a·gogue
ˈdeməˌɡäɡ/
noun
a political leader who seeks support by appealing to popular desires and prejudices rather than by using rational argument.
synonyms: rabble-rouser, agitator, political agitator, soapbox orator, firebrand, fomenter, provocateur
"he was drawn into a circle of campus demagogues"
(in ancient Greece and Rome) a leader or orator who espoused the cause of the common people.

If you want to some how imply that Trump used prejudice to get elected or will govern in a prejudiced manner then I disagree with the use of the descriptor. There is a difference between populism and prejudice.

Trump exemplifies demogoguery, regardless of the validity, he told his fans exactly what they wanted to hear, and the proof is that now he is already walking back on his promises

I think what Rana is trying to communicate is that this sort of anti intellectualism is beneath you. Pretty soon having the ability to rub two sticks together will make one an elite and an object of disdain of those who are pure simply via the means of being devoid of an intellect.

Hawkins is clearly a brilliant man but that doesn't mean one has to share his political opinion or that his political opinion is automatically right.

Well duh. That's true of anyone but the fact that he's a man of proven extraordinary intelligence gives him a level of credibility that I respect and listen too. It doesn't mean he's right but that he's a man who has "earned" respect via his extraordinary ablity and accomplishments.

I find the anti intellectualism in current conservative politics and their rhetoric not only disturbing but down right un-American. Since when has this ever been a A Nation that aspires to ignorance?

except he just went thru an entire article acknowledging that people hate the elites and said the only thing they need to do is "more humility"

He said no such thing. That's your spin. Besides rejecting progress and technical advancement and demonizing our most accomplished people as "elites" is not only not a solution it is counterproductive and down right foolish. Nor is being led by a mediocrity born with a silver spoon in his mouth who exploits the ignorant with lies and promises that can't be kept a solution. Which is why I have been laughing pretty much non stop since Trump was elected.

solution is pretty simple they have to share more of the wealth. If income inequality goes down a lot of these problems go way. OUtsourcing, illegal immigration, etc they are all means to concentrate more of the wealth into their hands. Yet the genius stephen hawing couldnt even figure that out.
