Has there ever been a secretary of state from a different party than the president?

I remember seward hated lincolns guts but lincoln made him secretary of state.
they were same party though. but seward was super salty at first when he didn't get the nom
so Trump would be history making if he picked a democrat. hmmmmm.

yus. I could definetly be wrong though. But im 100% that Romney is being used as an object lesson as to how toxic you become to the base by goin against trump.

There have been cabinet officers, as tokens of bipartisanship. FDR had some Republicans, but, I'm not sure about SoS. When Washington appointed Jefferson, the party system hadn't really begun yet, although I expect he knew that Hamilton and Jefferson represented opposing ideologies.
I do think that was the goal, but it seems to be backfiring, he had to send his lapdog Conway out to try to whip up some anger and I really have not seen the backlash that I believe they were hoping for.
The Religious Right will never allow her to have a significant position in this administration.

She's Hindu, so I'd have no problem with her in a cabinet position. As long as she's not Muslim, I have no issue with her from a religious perspective.
hindus tend to have realistic expectations of muslims as well.
