On Saturday evening it was claimed that Loretta Lynch, the attorney general, advised Mr Comey not to send the letter – but Mr Comey replied that he felt it was his “obligation” to do so.

It was also claimed that officials from the justice department had warned Mr Comey would be operating against standard procedure in sending the letter.

They said Mr Comey was “operating independently of the justice department” and that their department's policy was “that we don’t comment on an ongoing investigation. And we don’t take steps that will be viewed as influencing an election.”

One of the officials, who spoke to The Washington Post, said: “Director Comey understood our position. He heard it from justice leadership."

Mrs Clinton’s campaign chief John Podesta reacted with fury on Saturday - all but declaring war on Mr Comey and accusing him of sabotaging their campaign.

Again - this is completely against precedent.

People have a right to know...but they're not going to know anything until the investigation is completed. The ONLY thing Comey did was allow Trump to create a new narrative, and allege the worst. In all likelihood, there is NOTHING new in these emails.

There is a reason that it was precedent to allow the 60 day window. This might turn up nothing, and STILL decide this election. Sorry - when you're on the wrong side of that, you won't agree that it was the right thing to do. Because it wasn't. Because it's not what they ever do.
