oct 24 2016 Several Italian naval officers are being investigated by prosecutors for culpable homicide as a result of their alleged failure to rescue migrants from a sinking fishing boat – an incident in which around 300 people lost their lives, including over 100 children.

Lieutenant Catia Pellegrino, the commander of the patrol vessel Libra, who has a presidential medal of honour for rescues she’s co-ordinated, is one of those suspected of mishandling the SOS situation.

The tragedy, which occurred in the Mediterranean on October 11, 2013, appears to be the result of confusion over who should come to the aid of the boat between the Italian and Maltese authorities, it’s been reported.

Leaving a boat-load of refugees, starving civilians adrift at sea when there's a practical means to rescue them may be a violation of international law.

I just put a few thousand miles on my new Honda Civic driving from NY to North Carolina.
Some of the highways between here and there have posted speed limits of 70 MPH.
And some of those also have signs that assert driving in excess of 80 MPH is reckless driving.

And yet !!

The "flow of traffic" often exceeded 80 MPH.

Our motor vehicle and traffic laws all %$#@ up.

Some of our speed limits were set & posted when there were cars with 2 wheel brakes on the road.

But in the 3rd millennium, we have:

- 40,000 mile radial tires

- 4 wheel power disc brakes

- anti-lock

- cruise control

- GPS

- etc.

Confining drivers to speed limits that became obsolete over a half century ago is absurd!

And the proof that the COPs know it?
I can't tell you how many speed traps I blew through at 80 MPH or more, with the COP right there to witness the traffic as it went by, and not even take it out of "Park".

I'm just as much a champion of road safety as you are. But inflicting 2nd Millennium standards on 3rd Millennium drivers driving 3rd Millennium cars is troglodytic.

This one came from 'Syria' trying to make it to Lampedusa ( which sounds very much like the Libya route -but no matter)..
