Child care providers are one of the most underpaid professions in society. They are regulated because for the safety of the children and protection of childcare providers. People cry about regulation until someone child dies as a result of lax daycare procedures, then all hell breaks loose. Parents demand cheap daycare but also have very high expectations for care. $1,000 a month, what does that breakdown to hourly? What kind of facility can be maintained at those costs? What kind of safety, equipment etc. The answer, not much. This is another case of people wanting a lot, but not willing or able to pay for it. The caregivers end up supplying a lot at their own expense.

There are no easy answers and again, deregulation is not one of them.

So because people want a lot of stuff and don't want to pay for it, you think the gobblement should step in and subsidize their wants? Yeah, that makes sense.

The Law of Supply and Demand liberal style. You demand it. The gobblement supplies it.

No easy answers? They lay out pretty clearly all the expense that is added on because of regulation and why as a result it is so difficult for especially poor families to have it. The article in no way advocates no regulation but people can't complain about the cost while supporting pokicies that drive the costs off the chart

That is the way it always works with gobblement. Because gobblement can prevent EVERY bad thing from happening. The free market couldn't possibly decide what is a good or bad daycare center. You know those parents. They would just drop their offspring off at any old place to save a buck. So thinks Herceptin Rana

Yet another long winded, redundant article. It took long enough to present the horrid regulations that the author so despises
There is a book-length set of regulations at the federal level. All workers are required to receive health and safety training in specific areas. The feds mandate adherence to all building, fire, and health codes. All workers have to get comprehensive background checks, including fingerprinting.
There are strict and complex rules about the ratio of workers per child, in effect preventing economies of scale from driving down the price. Child labor laws limit the labor pool. And everyone has to agree to constant and random monitoring by bureaucrats from many agencies. Finally, there are all the rules concerning immigration, tax withholding, minimum wages, maximum working hours, health benefits, and vacation times.

I didn't take the time to read any further. If you think the above regulations are bad, by all means...leave your future children in a black market daycare. See how that works out for you.
 
What this industry needs is not subsidies but massive, dramatic, and immediate deregulation at all levels. Prices would fall dramatically. New options would be available for everyone. What is now a problem would vanish in a matter of weeks. It’s a guaranteed solution to a very real problem.

I knew the straw man was coming. If I (people) say regulations are excessive it means we want no regulations.

The additional irony in what you write is it is this excess regulation that creates a black market. I would assume even liberals would understand that basic market function but maybe I was wrong.

It's like everything else in the free market you believe is the answer to everything....quality products cost more than garbage. There's nothing wrong with paying extra for the knowledge that your children are safe, well fed, and in many cases, learning during their stay at daycare.

The Feds want to create tax credits for this. It allows more people to join the workforce, and pay taxes.

Silly boy. You have no children. You can't possibly know the struggle of finding quality child daycare in this country. It's like everything else in the free market you believe is the answer to everything....quality products cost more than garbage. There's nothing wrong with paying extra for the knowledge that your children are safe, well fed, and in many cases, learning during their stay at daycare.

Boy? Remind me who you are again?

My wife is over eight months pregnant so yes I will be a father. My wife has a masters degree in early childhood development, she directed a preschool for 10 years and has been looking into watching other kids along with our baby after baby girl is born. So I am aware of the cost and the amount of regulations that go into someone being allowed to watch other children. So please spout your holier than thou ignorance to someone else
