The Obama birth certificate issue is a patently transparent attempt at deflection by the media, as they attempt to keep Hillary from totally tanking.
That the media[!] would be complicit in such a thing is a way bigger story than Birther Gate and probably warrants its own thread.
But I was bored and did some research and found that, in the early 90's, Barack Obama himself claimed to be born in Kenya. Since I wasn't sure of the source I went to the [at least quasi-liberal] fact checker Snopes:
http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/birthers/booklet.asp
And sure enough, Obama---or someone posing as Obama, wrote a biography that claimed he was born in Kenya. This was explained away as a mistake by someone besides Obama, who was writing Obamas biography.
One would think he'd write it himself but whatever.
Whether you choose to believe it was a mistake is up to you. The most likely explanation for it is Obama found it expedient to 'have been born in Kenya' at some point in his life. Ostensibly, as means to boost his stock amongst his liberal Harvard peers. He did go on to edit the Harvard Law Review.
But it's all clear as mud. Chalk it up to racism lol.
