Construction of Georgia mosque halted due to threats by armed militia

A meeting about whether to lift a moratorium on the construction of a mosque in an Atlanta suburb was canceled on Tuesday after a video made by right-wing militia members led to fears of armed violence.
According to NBC News, officials in Covington, GA canceled a city planning meeting dedicated to voting on whether to proceed with the construction of a new mosque and Muslim cemetery in the town.

Chris Hill — leader of local militia group the Three Percent Security Force — told reporters that he made the video during a weekend protest against the mosque.

“I was just shooting from the hip is what I was doing, and saying, ‘Right over there, this is going to be a future ISIS training group. This is where you’re going to see terrorism taking hold in Newton County.’ It’s tied to terrorism, everything from 9/11 to Boston bombings to the Fort Hood shooting, to the coup in Turkey. It’s all connected,” said Hill, who goes by the name “Blood Agent” in his videos.

On Tuesday, armed militiamen protested outside the site of the proposed meeting, some carry assault weapons, others with sidearms. One man walked in circles shouting through a megaphone.

Hill, a Marine veteran, said that at no point has his group made violent threats against city officials, but Newton County administrators took the video seriously enough to postpone the planning meeting.

In a statement, Newton County manager Lloyd Kerr said, “Unfortunately in today’s society, uncivil threats or intentions must be taken seriously.”

The group hoping to open a house of worship and consecrate ground to bury their dead quietly filed for a permit to build the mosque earlier this year, but local newspaper the Newton Citizen made the plan public knowledge, prompting outrage, in August.

In mid-August, city officials declared a moratorium on the project. Tuesday’s meeting was ostensibly intended to take a vote on whether to lift the restriction.
Hill told WXIA that he will continue to protest if plans for the mosque go forward.

As an American, I have a right to defend. As a Marine, I have a right and a duty to defend our country and our Constitution,” he said.

Edward Ahmed of the Georgia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations told WXIA that this is typical of many Muslims’ experience in the U.S. in our divided political climate.

“American Muslims, every time that we go outside, we are standing up to extremists. If we can do that, then a county commission surrounded by law enforcement officers should be able to do the same thing,” he said.

As an American, I have a right to defend. As a Marine, I have a right and a duty to defend our country and our Constitution.

It is that statement, which I can only suppose Hill uttered without understanding exactly how ironic it is, that shows how successful the attempts of Al Qaeda and ISIS to destroy America have been.

The fact that he claims to defend the Constitution by gutting one of its most precious and important components shows that there are, indeed, terrifying extremists in the United States, and they're Just.Like.Him.

The scene depicted in the photograph, with the bearded, thoughtless Hill standing before an American flag held by a man who clearly has too many beers, not enough exercise and absolutely no sense of style, claiming to be some kind of defender sickens me.

Hill also makes the mistake of thinking that "As a Marine, I have the right and duty..." No, you don't. Not JUST as a Marine. We all have that right and duty, whether we're militarily engaged or not. When he was a Marine he had an absolute duty to uphold, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America. It's astonishing how he defines the word "defend", especially considering what he's actually doing is working to destroy it.

Being a current or former member of any branch of the armed services doesn't mean you're automatically a hero and/or patriot, and what's truly frightening is that so few people truly understand that fact.

Chris Hill, former Marine, by his comments about Muslims - who are supposed to be protected by the Constitution from exactly the kind of religious bigotry he is displaying - is by his words and actions most unpatriotic, anti-American, anti-Constitution and certainly no hero.

The irony is that Christians would never be allowed to build a church in most Islamic countries.

You do realize how bereft of thought your comment is, yes?

This is America, where our Constitution guarantees religious freedom. We are not talking about an Islamic country.

Are you familiar with the old adage about apples and oranges?

Is that your idea of America?

A huge # of people who came here in the beginning (and since) did so for religious freedom. You guys are so ignorant it's laughable.

Remember what I said about there being extremists in the US just like Hill?

...

Um, that's because most Islamic countries don't have the freedoms that we do.

Are you advocating this or something?
Just pointing out the irony. I'm all for religious freedom, but it is ironic that the very folk who enjoy it here, do not offer the same where, mostly, Islam is the predominant religion. If they spoke up about the disparity, they would have a leg to stand on.

The fools who want to ban, Islamic churches are no better than Muslims who do the same. Do you agree?

You are a true fucking moron.

How do you equate the "people who enjoy it here" with those who "do not offer the same"?

They CAME HERE FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM. Just like MILLIONS OF PEOPLE CAME HERE FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM throughout history, including many of our founders.

What a fucking moron.

David Koresh wanted religious freedom too. We didn't allow that shit either.
