You can find inconsistencies in any presidential campaign and Trump gets a hefty dose of 'perceived' because the media has abandoned even the pretense of objectivity about covering his campaign.

Because he changed his position after NATO changed theirs, this doesn't equate to stupidity. It equates to more media bias against him. Every time the media takes Trump's words out of context to attack him, the cone of protection that they created around Hillary tightens.

no need to tell me about media bias - it's a given. Trump needs to realize it, and act accordingly.

I do not agree with a transactional foreign policy when it comes to NATO ; it's a treaty not a changeable policy.
In this case I don't care all that much about getting their 2%. It's too important to strengthen ties

Yes and let us remember that Europe's economies have been rebuilt decades ago leaving NATO excuse-less for being in existence in the first place. If they're now willing to finally get in the game against ISIS, at least they appear to now have a purpose for existing.
