Your argument is based on an all or nothing fallacy: basically, we needed to stay in Iraq at unacceptable costs in life or treasure; or, we say screw it and leave. Obama opted for the latter and it gave us ISIS.

In reality, a long term commitment would have entailed a force of 40,000 or so troops. Keep in mind that in 2008 Iraq was stable and arguably a safer place than the south side of Chicago on a hot August weekend---that's no exaggeration.

There were no good choices at the time. But that was the best worst choice and Obama reneged on it. His own Sec Def criticized Obama for not using leverage on the Iraqis to secure a status of forces agreement.

For how long? Who knows? How ever long it took to prevent an group like ISIS from taking over and setting up a caliphate in Iraq.

Obama could have left behind a force of around 20,000-30,000 but opted to just get the fuck out. Even Mama Clinton wanted to do that but Obama called the shots. He fucked up and should be judged harshly by history as a consequence.
