Oh can I relate to this article. I've lived, worked in, the Middletown, Ohio area for three years. As the name implies, it's midway between Dayton and Cincinnati on Interstate 75. That experience has indelibly affected my attitude of hostility towards, rednecks/hillbillies or "Briars" as they call them in Southwest Ohio. Having said that to compare your average rural/small town working class white guys to the degenerate fucking Hillbilly's of Middletown is a gross mischaracterization.



When J.D. Vance was a boy, his beloved grandmother “Mamaw” told her boozer husband that if he ever came home drunk again, she’d kill him. When he did, and passed out on the couch, she got a gasoline can, poured fuel all over him and dropped a lit match on his chest. He survived with mild burns, and later quit drinking.

One time when J.D.’s mom took exception to something the boy said in the car, she hit the accelerator and sped up to 100 miles per hour, screaming that she was going to kill them both. When he jumped in the backseat hoping to protect himself from the impact, he recalls, she instead pulled the car over “to beat the s- -t out of me.” The evening concluded with Mom being hauled away in a police car.

If the Democrats put up a decent candidate then Trump would have been fucked months ago, that he hasn't tells you just how much Hills is despised even within her own party.

It's interesting that the generalization used to be country club Republicans and then working class whites were democrats. Now we have this switch were democrats tend to look down on the lower educated whites.

They've always looked down their noses at the working class but they pander to the unions. With less prevalent numbers of people in unions, the democrats don't have to hide their disdain anymore.

Well forgotten in your comments is that Trump is despised by far more people which is a key element in why Clinton will probably win and why Trump is a 1:2 underdog.

You are correct. It appears we are watching an historical realignment of the two major political parties coalitions.

I doubt that is even true, the working classes in the US are totally ignored by East Coast elitists like Clinton. Same story in the country which is why Brexit was voted for by so many in Wales and the North of England. Mott, you already been proved wrong about Brexit snd I suspect you will be wrong again.

Rolling your eyes at someone who extols ignorance as a virtue is not the same as looking down at someone. It also works both ways. I don't know how many times my working class buddies have said stupid shit to me like "You college guys aint got no common sense."

This educated vs. working class is an artificial distinction. For a long time white collar workers and blue collar workers political interest were aligned against a management class who were militant against an equitable distribution of wealth that was produced in our nation.

It wasn't until the Vietnam era where the opposition to the war and Jim Crow were lead by the college educated and the working class was offended by what they saw as attacks on traditional institutions and patriotism by the educated class that you began to see the division between the college educated and working class whites.

However I'll say this to those who consider themselves of the working class. You're kidding yourself if you think the plutocrats you've aligned your self with care about your economic well being and have not been working proactively to harm your economic well being.

Where as Democrats have done a pretty good job of representing women, minorities and the college educated...their largest constituents and if a white working class guy said "Democrats have done little for me lately." I don't think I could argue with that.

Hard to have been proven wrong about Brexit when I had no opinion about it Tom. Tom...you're NUT! I have lived among these people. I come from these people and for a good chunk of my life I was one of these people. As for Trump being less popular popular than Clinton, well the polling shows otherwise. If you look at the data from The North East, The Great Lakes and Pacific Coast reagions, our nations greatest populations center and see how unpopular Trump is there than you might see the light that there aint enough Hillbilly's to get Trump elected.
 
Again I would also like to stress my point too that the Appalachian poor white culture discussed in the article is NOT even remotely close to being representative of working class Americans. In this the Author of the article is misleading.

I do remember you having an opinion and it was basically to attempt to compare our situation with the USA. I believe that you said it was always better to be part of a bigger bloc and I said that we beg to differ, which of course we subsequently did!! I also recall Darla being incredibly elitist and arrogant, her default setting, saying that Brexit voters were just too stupid and only brainiacs like her should be allowed to vote.

Oh so you want to get into a pissing contest as to who came from a poorer background? Well I can beat you there, my home for the first five years of my life was a grotty tenement in East London. Up the road were many bomb sites which contained large numbers of unexploded bombs. There was fuck all health and safety back then.

Tom, I don't think you understand where I'm coming from. The difference between the working class folk of west Ohio is about three or four rungs up the socio-economic ladder than the Hillbilly culture of South West Ohio. Equating them with working class midwesterners is like comparing you to the Royals.
