You metaphor does not apply well here to Mrs Clinton. Assault weapons are already banned from citizen ownership.
The "first step" was taken decades ago, wasn't it?

First you start with assault weapons, then you move on to the rest. There is by the way no need to ban semi auto assault weapons, because they are not any more dangerous then any semi auto hunting rifle, a fact that Clinton seems ignorant of.
