Despite the increase, the numbers are far below the figures from the early 1990s, during the crack epidemic, when the homicide count hovered around 900.

Trump lied to the miners to get their votes. He knows the mines can never be what they once were.

Coal miners are aware of the market realities because they work in it. They know coal will never be king again.
They're still moving coal out of WV in spite of the market and EPA regulations designed to leave it in the ground. Not nearly as much as they used to but it still goes out. What the miners see in Trump, is someone that will do what he can to move more of it out. I don't know what his plan is on the trade aspect [if one exists] but the EPA regulations would be easy for a president to address.
And it would bring some of the jobs back since it wasn't just one thing that killed the coal market. Coal got tag-teamed by the market and the EPA.
Crooked Hillary promised to put them out of work and keep them that way. Who would you vote for lol?
There is currently little to no reason to mine coal, because it can not be burned, this is why the miners are out of work. Trump can fix this easily, by just building new clean coal fired power plants. This creates construction jobs and mining jobs as well. This is why the blue collar miners are voting for Trump and not crooked hillary
