David Hiden said his son, aged five, was paddling in a lagoon next to a Disney World hotel in Orlando last year when a six to seven foot gator swam up towards him.
After he spotted the reptile, he grabbed his son and ran to safety – before spotting a second alligator lurking when he looked back at the water.
But he says when he spoke to staff at the resort about the danger, they told him the animals were ‘resident pets’.
Not convinced, he said: ‘I hope I’m wrong, but at some point, I bet I’m going to read about you guys where one of your resident pets killed somebody. And I hope to god it never happens because it’s gonna be on your shoulders.’
Yesterday, staff could be seen erecting fences around the edge of the lagoon, where a sign has now been put up warning of alligators in the water.
