Police investigating the killing of MP Jo Cox have said they are prioritizing inquiries into the suspect's links to right-wing extremism.

Mrs Cox, 41, was shot and stabbed outside her constituency surgery in West Yorkshire on Thursday. A 52-year-old man has been arrested.

Nazi regalia was recovered at suspect Tom's home.

Perhaps.

Slain British politician Jo Cox was the victim of an "isolated, but targeted attack," West Yorkshire police said Friday.

A local official briefed by police told CNN that the gunman "lay in wait" for Cox.

A 77-year-old man who intervened to help Cox also "sustained a serious injury," police said. He's stable but remains in the hospital.

The killing has muted the tone of public discussions over the referendum, which has focused heavily on immigration. It put the brakes on official campaigning, with both sides suspending activities out of respect for Cox, just as they had begun to ratchet up their arguments in the final leg of the race. The BBC canceled a TV debate on the referendum scheduled for Friday night.

The pro-Brexit campaign called off major events for Saturday, including a big rally planned in Birmingham, Robert Oxley, a spokesman for Vote Leave, told CNN.

Boris must be apoplectic. He's staked his entire future on Brexit and some unknown do-gooder has got herself shot by a Boris fan.

It's the rebirth of conscience- and the death of Boris.

She was hardly unknown.

I think so. I couldn't name even twenty members of Congress and I'm pretty sure that the average Brit could name only a handful of MPs.

Still- she ain't unknown now and nobody knows that better than Boris, the Tory self-server in waiting.

Boris and the deniers who try to pretend that Tom the assassin isn't one of their lot have a problem.

The man charged with the murder of Labor MP Jo Cox gave his name as "Death to traitors, freedom for Britain" during his first court appearance.
