It must be a magical time to be a racist

They would but at that rate there will be less jobs doing the work that was available at say $7. Does that make sense?

There's two competing interests with the minimum wage. You hear people talk about a "living wage" and that someone who has a family should be able to support them on a minimum wage salary.

But for young kids minimum wage jobs are about making money yes, but it's more about experience. And at the higher rate young "at risk" kids have less of an opportunity to get that experience. That's where they get hurt.

^ You seem to be suggesting that an increase in the minimum wage will lead to a corresponding decrease in available jobs. That's not true.

"The buying power of the minimum wage reached its peak in 1968 at $10.97, adjusting for inflation in 2015 dollars. The unemployment rate went from 3.8% in 1967 to 3.6% in 1968 to 3.5% in 1969. The next time the unemployment rate came close to those levels was after the minimum wage raises of 1996 and 1997. Business Week observed in 2001, “Many economists have backed away from the argument that minimum wage [laws] lead to fewer jobs.”

Numerous states raised their minimum wages higher than the federal level during the 1997-2007 period the federal minimum wage remained stuck at $5.15. Research by the Fiscal Policy Institute and others showed that states that raised their minimum wages above the federal level experienced better employment and small business trends than states that did not."

And

"One of the most thorough reports on this debate comes out of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, a progressive think tank. The report concludes that the "bulk of the best statistical evidence" shows little to no effect on employment when the minimum wage goes up. Those who say raising the minimum wage results in job loss generally follow the logic that when workers become more expensive, businesses will be less likely to hire them, and unemployment follows.

David Neumark is an economist who has researched the issue and believes raising the minimum wage reduces employment for the lowest skilled workers. He noted, though, that the economy has grown over the long term, resulting in job growth in all wage and skill levels."

That was then, this is now and service jobs are now the majority of our jobs, and education is costly, so, minimum wage jobs are now held by adults and sometimes, they have to have two or three minimum wage jobs to exist.

You're absolutely right. Remember that divorced woman who told bush she had to hold down three jobs to support her kids and his comment was “You work three jobs? Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that you're doing that."

Totally, completely out of touch with ordinary Americans.

When I was in Vietnam, I met a woman who had gone to uni in England with my daughter in law. She had four jobs and I asked when she actually went to sleep!! Her husband was a slacker by comparison and only had three jobs.

Nice discussion everyone. I appreciated it :)

I think we have learned today that blacks entrusted dems with 90% of their votes and dems returned the favor by screwing them over. :good4u:

I think you believe that and you only speak for yourself. It must be embarrassing to know how little blacks think of the GOP.

Then punish the people who are giving the jobs to illegals. That's something nobody wants to touch because it reaches up so high in government and business.

Face it, business owners love employing illegals because they can get them for lower pay and crappier treatment than American workers.

Go look at the most recent CBO report on the affects of raising the rate and it flat out says it will cost jobs.

I can find studies done by libertarian institutes that show opposite research than this progressive think tank. But the debate over it shouldn't be a partisan pissing match.

How's it out of touch when Rana is claiming it's becoming more of a regular thing?

My parents and grand parents worked long hours, and legal immigrants have always done so. And it goes without saying farmers always have and always will.

Farmers work long hours by choice. I don't buy the argument that just because people had it bad in the past, they should accept having it bad now. Maybe your parents and grandparents would have loved spending more time with the family than working just to stay alive.

Our econony has changed. This isn't a new thing. And with the growth of technology it's going to continue to change. (What we need are forward looking people in charge and instead we have two seventy year old dinosaur Presidental candidates. Unltinately it's much bigger than just the President).

So we have a changing econony but an education system that is often stuck in the past. In an information economy education and knowledge is key. That's where our focus needs to be.

Back to the minimum wage discussion. Why do you think they want to move it to $15 instead of any amount higher? We all know cost of living is different across the country but wouldn't $18, $20 or $22 be more helpful to a family?

The answer of course is there would be negative effects attached to it. We even hear Democrats saying $15 is too much in some areas.

I'm curious what you think the reason is they don't ask for higher?

thanks for the source..imentioned "effective" as I have been told no corps ( or few corps) actually pay those rates.
however I am also aware that many profits are held 'offshore' so as not to be subjected to US tax rates.

every nation has the same impact of effective versus actual rates.....except those that charge so low a tax that no one bothers to take deductions.......
