Voter Registration Surge in California

Who knows when we'll have a statewide Republican elected again in California but if this happens nationwide not good news for the GOP.

Does Trump Explain A Big Voter Registration Surge in California?

Those tempted to believe the Trump phenomenon will usher waves of new voters into this fall’s electorate may be right — except, those may be waves of anti-Trump voters. Ever since Trump began dominating the 2016 news cycle, Democrats have been salivating over the prospect of record engagement among young voters and Latinos. Now, there’s some evidence that surge may be arriving, with potentially disastrous consequences for the GOP.

California political data guru Paul Mitchell sounded a siren late last week, observing in the Sacramento-based Capitol Weekly that new voter registrations doubled among Latinos, rose 150 percent among young voters and tripled among Democrats compared to this point in 2012. Consider that Trump’s favorability/unfavorability has recently been pegged at 17/74 among millennials and a mind-boggling 9/87 among Latinos.

Sure, Republicans never had a chance to win California to begin with. But if we begin to see similar registration numbers in many other states, Republicans could be headed for the electoral apocalypse many Democrats have predicted.

what difference does it make......California will still have the same number of electoral votes.......

a better question is, can Hillary win the seven states that Obama won in 2008 that Bush won in 2004.........

I wouldn't be too quick to assume they'll turn out to be Hillary supporters just because they register for the primary. Most of the the first time voters are part of the insurrection against the establishment on both sides.

And Hillary is as establishment as it gets. If the democrats think their insurrection movement will just disappear once Hillary gets past Bernie they may be in for a rude awakening.

New Hispanic voters didn't double because they are anti-establishment, it's because they are anti-Trump.

It will be interesting to see if they can sustain their Trump angst if that's what will motivate them to vote for Hillary.

Being a white guy I can only surmise what they are thinking but I don't think they care who the Democratic candidate is, they are voting for Trump's opponent.

You've been exposed to too much privilege rhetoric lol. They're people just like we are and their brains work the same way as ours. Just from a psychological standpoint, I think people would be more apt to turn out to vote if they like who they are voting for and Hillary isn't an attractive candidate. If the motivation is to vote in order to defeat someone rather elect someone, I think apathy would be apt to set in.

Also, Trump can be pretty persuasive and I'll be surprised if he doesn't make some sort of overture to the Hispanics. I can't imagine why he wouldn't. If the only thing he needs to do is come off as something less than the embodiment of evil, that means the bar is set pretty low.

With favorable/unfavorable ratings of 9/87 with Hispanics that would be an amazing sales job if Trump turns those numbers around. I don't know how he does that as long as he sticks with building a wall and deporting all illegals positions.

Trump and Hillary may be the two most disliked candidates to ever hold their party's nomination and they will be running against each other. That's pretty crazy. But I don't see Hispanic voters having apathy against Trump. He's made his feelings about them pretty clear.

It may not matter. I'm Sitting here watching Trump's speech after today's primaries and he's sweet talking Bernie's people and telling them they got screwed by the system. If he gets a significant number of Bernie's people all bets are off.

I'm just curious; but what are his "feelings about them"??

From what I've read from Hispanic writers it continually points back to his statements when he announced he was running.

Now maybe Trump doesn't actually believe that and just said it for political consumption but either way the numbers pretty clearly speak to how the comments were received.

That wasn't what I asked you, so please stop acting like Legion.

Well, that's kind of it isn't it, lol. Trump or any republican contender will have every word scrutinized when the topic is race related. What he said was that Mexico was sending *some* rapists and crooks over the border along with some good Mexican people.

Which is an undeniable fact.

Deporting illegal immigrants gets converted to 'Trump hates Mexicans' when the reality is that Trump hates illegal immigration, if he hates anything. The reality is that he sees the myriad problems illegal immigration is causing for our own poor people. A sane, dare I say moral?, country takes care of those first.

But look for Hillary and her minions in press and blogosphere to double down on the Trump is a hater rhetoric once it becomes clear its Trump vs Hillary.

How Trump contends with it may well determine the election.

Trump will be no McGovern. He will win at least ten States.

I think Wacko is assuming that they will turn out for the general and that Clinton will be the presumptive nominee. Not unfair assumption given how CA currently polls. Do you honestly think Trump will take CA?

If the election were today that would be a resounding yes. Trump has alienated women, latinos, blacks, Asians and women. Even if he were to poll at 75% with white men his odds are poor. It's also extremely doubtful he could win that many white men. Not all white guys are anal retentive social conservatives or Bubba rednecks.
