What is funny about this data is the lies that liberals tell about all of the defense spending. 70% of government spending is welfare related. Yes, Socialist inSecurity is a welfare program. So is Medicare. I know the left wingers will jump and down until they are blue in the face with the "they paid into the system" garbage. But, the truth of the matter is that most people receive far more than they ever pay in. In fact some folks i.e., illegal immigrants get money and NEVER pay in.

The other fallacy leftists like to tell is that "we need only go back to the glorious 1950s when the top marginal rate was 90%" as if the government has a problem with the amount of money it takes in and doesn't have a drinking problem.

Again, it is like saying that Desh's problem isn't that she smokes too much crack. No she needs MORE crack

"Welfare-related" is pretty broad. Usually, conservatives talk about the actual welfare program as though it's the big budget-buster. It ain't. And defense is a huge area for the budget, not just in terms of expenditure, but also when it comes to waste.

That said, I agree w/ the overall sentiment, and think that higher taxes are never the answer - to any question. We should have a top rate of 33.3% for any American; no one should pay over a third of their income in taxes. Clinton talked about a "smaller, smarter government," and someone needs to actually follow through on that. Our government is not smart; our programs are not smart. They are all run with a large degree of inefficiency. The Clinton admin actually started a project to figure out how to run programs more efficiently, but it was abandoned. Something like that is sorely needed. I think people would be surprised by how little we'd have to cut to balance the budget & pay the debt, if things were just run and administered more like the private sector.

Difference is defense is a Constitutionally delegated authority, you can even read it in black/white, while social welfare isn't. Sounds to me like your argument is based on how much is spent rather than on whether or not it is authorized to be spent.
