A judge accused church leaders of a cover-up yesterday as he sentenced a former vicar who raped two Christian girls to 15 years in jail.

The Oxford-educated trainee vicar had groomed hundreds of other children, using his position as a youth leader to ‘systematically pick off weak, insecure girls’.

But despite numerous warnings about his behavior, ‘arrogant’ church leaders remained ‘stone deaf’ to complaints from his rape victims aged 16 and 17, and failed to inform police, the judge said.

Scotland Yard was only called in to investigate the serious sex attacks after Storey appeared on the front page of the Daily Mail for grooming underage girls.

He had become ‘every parent’s worst nightmare’ as he preached at St Michael’s Church while targeting girls from the congregation for sex.

Leading camps for teenagers in the Kent countryside, he manipulated girls ‘dazzled’ by his looks, sending them flattering messages on social media before tricking them into sending explicit images of themselves.

The story prompted two women, now aged 24 and 25, to tell officers they were raped by Storey as teenagers.

Both girls made complaints, but church leaders failed to pass information to police, ensuring the ruthless pervert was free to groom victims for another six years.

Police were finally informed and discovered Storey was grooming hundreds of children, posing online as a teenager to persuade girls as young as 12 to film themselves naked.

But at court he was initially given a rehabilitation order – and within hours flouted a ban to find new victims on dating websites.

Days after his sentencing he is suspected of raping a 20-year-old he contacted online.

Storey smirked as he was jailed yesterday.

Pastor Robert Jerez, Grace Walk Church, Tolleson, Arizona

A pastor has been arrested for having a sexual relationship with an underage member of his church.

Court records show 35-year-old Robert Jerez had had sex more than 10 times after he shared drugs and alcohol with the girl.

Police got a call from an employee of Grace Walk Church, near 78th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road, saying a young female churchgoer told a friend that she had a sexual relationship with the pastor.

The victim's father provided police with his daughter's cell phone which contained texted photos between the two that were sexual in nature.

The victim reported to police that they had sex multiple times at her father's home.

In his police interview, Jerez reportedly confessed to the sexual relationship and admitted he knew the victim was underage.

God, the Rod, and Your Child's Bod

“I know in this room that C.J. Mahaney has 10,000 friends,” said Albert Mohler Jr. at Together for the Gospel 2016 last week, a conference that regularly draws big names and large crowds.

The April 12-14 gathering became the focus of controversy when it invited Mahaney, the senior pastor at Sovereign Grace Church, to speak. He and other pastoral colleagues have been accused of covering up child sex abuse in their churches.

Mahaney officially co-founded Covenant Life Church. This became the flagship for an association known as Sovereign Grace Ministries. Today they are called Sovereign Grace Churches. Sovereign Grace’s culture incorporates a strong emphasis on homeschooling, patriarchy, and corporal punishment, the latter based on the book, God, the Rod, and Your Child's Bod.

A civil suit was filed in 2012, accusing Mahaney and other Sovereign Grace pastors of covering up the sexual abuse of children.

“Defendants failed to report known incidences of sexual predation to law enforcement, encouraged parents to refrain from reporting the assaults to law enforcement, and interposed themselves between the parents of the victims and law enforcement in order to mislead law enforcement into believing parents had ‘forgiven’ those who preyed on their children Defendants’ repeated acts and omissions created a culture in which sexual predators were protected from accountability and victims were silence.”

The case was eventually dismissed in 2013 due to the statute of limitations in Maryland.

Susan Burke, legal representation for those in the dismissed case, plans to bring a new suit in Virginia—where there aren’t statute of limitations restraints—on behalf of those with claims of abuse.

Since the original dismissal of the civil lawsuit in 2013, there have been convictions and new charges against members in the SGC.

In 2014, a jury in Maryland found Nathaniel Morales, an active member at Covenant Life Church, guilty of molesting three teenage boys. His pastor admitted under cross-examination that he should have reported what he knew.

On March 16, Covenant Life Church member Larry Ellis Caffery was charged with nine counts of child sexual abuse and two of false imprisonment.

A pastor faces charges of child enticement after authorities say he planned to meet who he thought was a 13-year-old girl for sex while in Oshkosh for a pastor's conference.

The Rev. Joshua C. Scheil, 28, of Trevor, was charged Monday in Winnebago County Circuit Court, where Judge Scott Woldt set a $10,000 cash bond. Scheil faces charges of attempted child enticement, using a computer to facilitate a child sex crime and causing a child 13 years old or younger to view or listen to sexual activity.

According to a news release from the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office, Scheil contacted an undercover crime analyst who was posing as a 13-year-old girl from the Oshkosh area. Scheil said he would be in the Oshkosh area April 11 to 13 and would be staying in a hotel.

Scheil sent sexually explicit messages several times, saying he wanted to have sexual relations with her when he came to town, according to the news release. He also sent an explicit image.

On Tuesday, Scheil sent another message, saying he was in town and asked to meet, according to the news release. When Scheil showed up for the meeting, authorities arrested him.

Scheil serves as a pastor at Hope Lutheran Church in Twin Lakes, according to the church's website. The South Wisconsin District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod held its spring pastors conference April 11 to 13 at the Best Western Premier Waterfront Hotel.

LOVING KIDS FOR CHRIST

A church leader has defended his decision to hire a convicted pedophile - saying “it takes two to tango” and likening the crime to shoplifting.

Thomas Hopper spent 10 years in prison for the rape and sodomy at knifepoint of a 13-year-old girl, and was arrested a number of times following his release.

Pastor Michael Orten, of Truth Apostolic Church, Madisonville, Kentucky, defended his decision to employ Hopper work as part of the church’s outreach staff.

“This is situation if that a girl chooses, it takes two to tango, OK? If that girl chooses to sleep with him, she’s just as guilty as he is.”

Willie Lee Bell Jr.

Witnesses beat a Texas youth pastor whom they allegedly caught sexually assaulting a 6-year-old he’d reportedly lured behind an apartment building.

Police arrested Willie Lee Bell Jr., 29, a children's minister at First United Methodist Church in Cedar Hill, on Thursday, Fox 4 News reports. According to the news station, Bell's recent arrest was not the first time the youth pastor has been charged with sexual assault. He's currently facing two charges of sexually assaulting little boys at a Dallas apartment in February. The two boys reportedly told police that they were abused behind an apartment complex. The boys said that the man was wearing "church shoes."

Despite those charges, Fox 4 reports that Bell continued working around children at the church until his most recent arrest.

Whole Foods to take legal action against pastor who claimed cake had homophobic slur

An Austin pastor claims he ordered a cake from the Whole Foods store with the personalized message "Love Wins," but when he received it said "Love Wins FAG."

AUSTIN, Texas -- A Texas pastor who claimed a cake he bought from Whole Foods in Austin had a homophobic slur written on it is now facing legal action of his own from the supermarket giant.

avatar_f842cc342204_128.png

The attorneys for Pastor Jordan Brown said he ordered a cake from a Whole Foods store with the personalized message "Love Wins," but when he received it, the cake said "Love Wins FAG."

But Whole Foods is disputing his claim.

They say his accusations are fraudulent, and they intend to take legal action against Brown and his attorney. "Our bakery team member wrote 'Love Wins' at the top of the cake, which was visible to Mr. Brown through the clear portion of the packaging," Whole Foods said in a statement. "That's exactly how the cake was packaged and sold at the store. Whole Foods Market has a strict policy that prohibits team members from accepting or designing bakery orders that include language or images that are offensive."

Whole Foods also released the security footage of Brown checking out of the store, they say further backing their position. "Mr. Brown admits that he was in sole possession and control of the cake until he posted his video, which showed the UPC label on the bottom and side of the box," the statement read.

"After reviewing our security footage of Mr. Brown, it's clear that the UPC label was in fact on top of the cake box, not on the side of the package."
Whole Foods added that they stand behind their bakery team member, who is a member of the LGBTQ community.

"And we appreciate the team members and shoppers who recognize that this claim is completely false and directly contradicts Whole Foods Market's inclusive culture, which celebrates diversity," the statement said.

The press release from the company also included the following photo.
tmlovewinsembed.jpg

However, previously in a YouTube video, Pastor Brown had claimed the cake contained a homophobic slur. He said didn't realize what it said until he got into his vehicle. In the video, he shows the box containing the cake, apparently still sealed, with the message written on it.

Brown said he called and spoke to an employee at Whole Food after receiving the cake and the employee was extremely apologetic. He said the employee then requested the issue be taken care of internally, and would call him back.

Brown said in the video that when the employee, who appeared to be a store manager, called back two hours later, he said the Whole Foods employee did not do this, and said there was nothing that could be done.

Brown's attorneys told CBS affiliate KEYE, that after reaching out to the Whole Foods corporate office and receiving no substantive response for more than three days, they filed a lawsuit.

Brown's attorney previously released a statement in regards to the alleged incident, in which he said his client continues to be overwhelmed by the feelings of pain, anguish and humiliation because of this incident. He frequently shopped at Whole Foods, which makes this all the more shocking and disappointing," said Austin Kaplan, Brown's attorney. "What really concerns him is knowing that unless some action is taken, this kind of thing could happen again, and that someone else might have to go through a similarly excruciating experience."

According to his attorney, Pastor Brown is an openly gay African-American man, and founder of the Church of Open Doors, a non-denominational, Christian-based church.

Pastor Accused of Covering Up Abuse Returns to Spotlight
48696535.cached.jpg

Pastor C.J. Mahaney and his network of churches faced protests from victims groups last week after the controversial pastor came back in the public eye.
“I know in this room that C.J. Mahaney has 10,000 friends,” said Albert Mohler Jr. at Together for the Gospel 2016 last week, a Calvinist conference that regularly draws big names and large crowds.
The April 12-14 gathering held at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky, became the focus of controversy when it invited Mahaney, the senior pastor at Sovereign Grace Church in Kentucky, to speak. He and other pastoral colleagues have been accused of covering up child sex abuse in their churches. The lawsuit against them was eventually dismissed on a technicality.
Maybe the irony wasn’t lost on Together for the Gospel organizers and attendees, that a conference whose 2016 theme was to celebrate the “Protest” in “Protestants” was itself under protest. Organized by SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (recently featured in the movie Spotlight), the demonstrators included ex-members of Sovereign Grace Ministries. Letters were written; petitions were created.
“By allowing C.J. Mahaney to speak in an international place of prominence,” wrote SNAP in a letter to Together for the Gospel on March 31, “you are inadvertently sending a message to all sexual abuse victims—and in particular those from within Sovereign Grace Churches—that their trauma is not worth your consideration.”
Mahaney’s life work was born out of the Jesus movement of the 1970s, a charismatic revival movement built on prayer meetings and filled with Christian hippies. Mahaney was one of those hippies. Around 1980, he officially co-founded Covenant Life Church with his friend, Larry Tomczak, in Gaithersburg, Maryland. This became the flagship for an association of church plants best known as Sovereign Grace Ministries. Today they are called Sovereign Grace Churches. Sovereign Grace’s culture incorporates a strong emphasis on homeschooling, patriarchy, and corporal punishment, the latter based on the teachings of Tomczak and his book, God, the Rod, and Your Child's Bod (1982).
Trouble originally began for Mahaney in June of 2011, when he temporarily left then-Sovereign Grace Ministries after complaints were made of “pride, unentreatability, deceit, sinful judgment, and hypocrisy.” He was also accused of a heavyhanded rule. Mahaney stepped aside, he said, to re-evaluate his life and leadership. But after an internal review process and affirmation by the board, he returned to his position as president of the ministry early the next year.
A blog, SGM Survivors, became the outlet to tell the story of ex-members, including the accusations of sexual abuse and an authoritarian leadership.
A civil suit was filed in 2012, accusing Mahaney and other Sovereign Grace pastors of covering up the sexual abuse of children. The amended complaint from 2013 painted a portrait of a closed community that acted as its own court.
“Defendants failed to report known incidences of sexual predation to law enforcement, encouraged parents to refrain from reporting the assaults to law enforcement, and interposed themselves between the parents of the victims and law enforcement in order to mislead law enforcement into believing parents had ‘forgiven’ those who preyed on their children…Defendants’ repeated acts and omissions created a culture in which sexual predators were protected from accountability and victims were silence.”
The case was eventually dismissed in 2013 due to the statute of limitations in Maryland and an appeal was denied by the Maryland Court of Appeals the following year. Sovereign Grace Ministries engaged in another internal review and denied there were any efforts to cover up crimes. Mahaney left his presidency at Sovereign Grace the same year. According to reports, Susan Burke, legal representation for those in the dismissed case, plans to bring a new suit in Virginia—where there aren’t statute of limitations restraints—on behalf of those with claims of abuse in that state.

In 2013, The Together for the Gospel leadership, Mark Dever, Ligon Duncan, and Albert Mohler, issued a statement standing behind Mahaney and vouching for his integrity. But by 2014, the uproar over his ministry was loud and led him to drop out of that year’s conference. Mahaney, who is generally quiet about the accusations, has publicly expressed his grief for those who suffered, but rejects the claims about his ministry.
“I have never conspired to protect a child predator,” he wrote in 2014, “and I also deny all the claims made against me in the civil suit.”
The story of the Sovereign Grace Church scandal, however, was far from being over.
Since the original dismissal of the civil lawsuit in 2013, there have been convictions and new charges against members in the SGC. In 2014, for example, a jury in Maryland found Nathaniel Morales, an active member at Covenant Life Church, guilty of molesting three teenage boys. His former pastor at Covenant, Grant Layman, admitted under cross-examination that he should have reported what he knew. No new suits against Mahaney have been made.
