Sunday’s jaw-dropping “Panama Papers” leak, which shows a global network of offshore companies helping the wealthy hide their assets, is already being called “the Wikileaks of the mega-rich."

The hashtag #panamapapers topped Twitter on Sunday afternoon. Among those reacting through tweets: Edward Snowden, the 2013 CIA leaker, who said the “Biggest leak in the history of data journalism just went live, and it's about corruption.”

The Washington, D.C.-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalism (ICIJ) said the trove of 11.5 million records details the offshore holdings of a dozen current and former world leaders, as well as businessmen, criminals, celebrities and sports stars.

The data span nearly 40 years, from 1977 through the end of 2015, ICIJ said, allowing “a never-before-seen view inside the offshore world — providing a day-to-day, decade-by-decade look at how dark money flows through the global financial system, breeding crime and stripping national treasuries of tax revenues.”

Update:

A huge scandal over offshore tax havens has just exploded, so expect the five remaining presidential hopefuls to answer some questions that will leave some of the squirming.

Probably no one will squirm more than Hillary Clinton.

When you think of the term “global elite,” few names spring to mind more readily than Bill and Hillary Clinton. And while the former and perhaps future First Couple have had a pretty good run despite some spectacular ups and downs, the Panama Papers scandal may permanently dash their hopes of moving back into the White House.

The leak of 2.6 terabytes worth of data from a Panamanian law firm that specializes in facilitating tax dodging by rich people around the world is going to lead to some very uncomfortable questions for some world leaders (it already has, in Iceland’s case). That could include Hillary Clinton.

Not many Americans have been named in the Panama Papers yet. But expect big revelations over the course of the week.

Governments across the world began investigating financial wrongdoing by the rich and powerful on Monday after a leak of four decades of documents from a Panamanian law firm that specialized in setting up offshore accounts to shelter their wealth from taxation.

Think the average American might be paying less if the 1% wasn't evading taxes in offshore accounts?

The blue and orange in that pie should be at least equal.
