Firstly, dems would like people to think it's just angry white guys but it's not. Discontent with the economy cuts across all demographics. There are far more women who don't care about politics but care very much for their families and kids job prospects.
This is very much a pocketbook election and that drives the mushy middle like nothing else.

I ask the question again. How can Trump win a national election with only white voters?

I'm sure some of that is true, but ultimately, his main core of supporters is blue collar white men. He has really alienated key voting blocs & demographics. He's so polarizing that most of the electorate has made up their mind on him one way or the other.

I've been wrong about Trump every step of the way, so I wouldn't necessarily be shocked to see him win. But it would be some kind of magic trick the way things look right now.

Trump simply can't win a general election. This is setting up to be just like the Goldwater election, and chances are that Republicans will lose the Senate also. It's a disaster for conservatism.

What this means in practical terms is a Supreme Court that will tilt left for decades, and little to no action on the debt crisis. Nothing will change in the next 4 years.

Such a drag. Hillary is a weak candidate, but she'll beat Trump handily, with as little enthusiasm from most voters as we've seen in years. And the GOP had very good candidates to choose from. They blew it.

Financial sanity? I don't see how we return to that without cuts to entitlement or the military. Or if we have incredible growth. But we won't have any growth if he kicks out 12 million illegals

Easy. Raise taxes. Those issues are not insurmountable. They just take political will and leadership. Something we haven't seen coming out of DC in a long time.

I meant in terms of continuing on a more left-wing path. Hillary will be slightly more centrist than Obama was - but she won't do much about spending or the debt. The biggest impact of a Hillary Presidency will be w/ the court. It might be the most liberal court in modern history by the end of her term.

No, that's a facile answer. Raising taxes won't get us out of our current deficit let alone touch the national debt.

He's anti-gun. Heller will be overturned if he's on the court and that's what the nomination battle will most likely be over. (from my brief reading of the situation)

White male voters you mean. Neither Trump or Cruz is electable nationally. Just as you say that the whole of the nation isn't ready for a left wing democratic socialist like Bernie it isn't going to vote for a far right wing reactionary who has absolute and uncompromising views on constitutional issues that were decided a long time ago. Cruz's States rights and original intent views were decided against in 1865.

It's looking like women will decide who are next President will be.
