Clinton: ‘We’re Going to Put a Lot of Coal Miners and Coal Companies Out of Business’

Hillary Clinton said that her policies would “put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business” during Sunday night’s Ohio town hall on CNN.

Clinton was asked by TVOne’s Roland Martin about her Democratic primary success in states that tend to vote Republican in general elections, and he wondered how she could carry such states once matched up with a Republican rather than a far-left candidate like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.).

Clinton has struggled against Sanders in states that voted for Barack Obama in 2012, losing such contests as Michigan, New Hampshire, Colorado, Minnesota and Maine.

“I’m the only candidate which has a policy about how to bring economic opportunity using clean renewable energy as the key into coal country, because we’re going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business, right, Tim? and we’re going to make it clear that we don’t want to forget those people,” Clinton said.

“Those people labored in those mines for generations, losing their health, often losing their lives to turn on our lights and power our factories. Now we’ve got to move away from coal and all the other fossil fuels, but I don’t want to move away from the people who did the best they could to produce the energy that we relied on.”

Clinton went on to say she had put forward specific plans on how to incentivize more jobs and invest more in poorer communities.

What a wonderful way to rally for votes, yep, green energy, hope, and liberal farts. The Democrats will kill all the jobs, scare off 50% of the tax base, leave the borders open for criminals and terrorists, but we can take solace knowing that some other Democrat-connected Solyndra got millions before it went out of business.

Coal is going away no matter who wins the presidential election.
When that happens, Clinton will work to keep people in the coal industry working in other jobs.
She is the only candidate who will.
Thanks for pointing that out, RacistX.

The problem with most emerging technologies these days is that they aren't developed by the existing companies, so the workers have reason to fear. Hollywood and Blockbuster Video didn't develop the Redbox machines, so they are dead dinosaurs (that was an incredibly shortsighted mistake, too. They could have also prevented Netflix). Despite the creation of Tesla, automakers have at least been smart enough to develop their own hybrid cars.

True. But my point is Clinton is the only candidate who is candid enough about the end of the coal industry to foresee and address the future problem of unemployed coal workers.
Politicians who pretend coal use will go on forever and coal workers will remain employed, are not being honest with them and do not really have their best interests at heart.

OTOH, knowing Clinton's track record, I would much more expect a socialist like Sanders to take office and get to work making life miserable for the coal industry. Hillary would pander for its support and then work out some compromise that no one supports.

At least she is addressing the inevitability of their future unemployment.
No one else has.

The coal industry has been hit by a double-whammy in draconian EPA regulations and cheap natural gas. The latter is market forces at work but the former was done on purpose under the Obama administration.

Obama promised to put the coal industry out of business and with the help of cheap natural gas he's on the verge of it.

Trump, or whomever, would do well to hang that promise around Hillary's neck and make her own it in the rust belt states.

What jobs lol? Can we see them?

The people who were once gainfully employed shoveling horse manure from the streets of our cities and running livery services, found themselves without a job as the auto industry expanded across America and horses became outmoded as a means of urban transportation
Coal workers are now finding themselves facing a similar fate.
Pandering to their vote by promising to keep the status quo and stop the advancement of technology is unfair and dishonest to these people, to say the least.
Many understand that now. Before long they all will.
Clinton is being realistic.

Shoveling manure lol? You know how much coal miners make?

Also, people involved in the industry are aware of how much EPA regulations have to do with decline in demand for their product. And when they hear Hillary say 'WE are going to put a lot of coal miners out of work' they'll know who not to vote for.

And people wonder why someone like Trump is popular.

She can't keep a group that supports Democrats at a 95% rate working. She gives them an excuse to not work.

Hasn't anybody heard of UCG? This is a technology that holds great promise for the medium term until 4th gen nuclear power stations come on-stream.

However, as of late 2013, CCS had never been successfully implemented on a commercial scale as it was not within the scope of such projects and some had also resulted in environmental concerns. In Australia in 2014 the Government filed charges over alleged serious environmental harm stemming from Linc Energy's pilot Underground Coal Gasification plant near Chinchilla in the Queensland’s foodbowl of the Darling Downs.[29]
Meanwhile, as an article in the Bulletin of Atomic Sciences pointed out in March 2010, UCG could result in massive carbon emissions. “If an additional 4 trillion tonnes [of coal] were extracted without the use of carbon capture or other mitigation technologies atmospheric carbon-dioxide levels could quadruple,” the article says, “resulting in a global mean temperature increase of between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius.”[30][31]
Aquifer contamination is a potential environmental concern.[4][32] Organic and often toxic materials (such as phenol) could remain in the underground chamber after gasification if the chamber is not decommissioned. Site decommissioning and rehabilitation are standard requirements in resources development approvals whether that be UCG, oil and gas, or mining, and decommissioning of UCG chambers is relatively straightforward. Phenol leachate is the most significant environmental hazard due to its high water solubility and high reactiveness to gasification. The US Dept of Energy's Lawrence Livermore Institute conducted an early UCG experiment at very shallow depth and without hydrostatic pressure at Hoe Creek, Wyoming. They did not decommission that site and testing showed contaminants (including the carcinogen benzene) in the chamber. The chamber was later flushed and the site successfully rehabilitated. Some research has shown that the persistence of minor quantities of these contaminants in groundwater is short-lived and that ground water recovers within two years.[27] Even so, proper practice, supported by regulatory requirements, should be to flush and decommission each chamber and to rehabilitate UCG sites.
Newer UCG technologies and practices claim to address environmental concerns, such as issues related to groundwater contamination, by implementing the “Clean Cavern” concept.[33] This is the process whereby the gasifier is self-cleaned via the steam produced during operation and also after decommissioning. Another important practice is maintaining the pressure of the underground gasifier below that of the surrounding groundwater. The pressure difference forces groundwater to flow continuously into the gasifier and no chemical from the gasifier can escape into the surrounding strata. The pressure is controlled by the operator using pressure valves at the surface

Poor Borbo

Does a miner have the skills to make renewable energy things ? Nope. Can he compete in a global economy that has a mature manufacturing environment that already produces these gpods far cheaper ? Nope.
So they're out of work with no translatable skills, we are stuck with much more expensive power bills (making us even less competetive internationally).

Sounds wonderful....

If you think Clinton has anyone but her own interests in mind, you're a fool.
