If we didn't drop the bombs we would have had to directly invade Japan, which most military experts agree would have killed over 500,000 people. When you look at how many died simply taking Okenwa and Iwo Jima.

Yet many at the time said those bombs were unnecessary, including people like Churchill, Eisenhower and George Marshall.

This has been discussed before and liberals don't want to believe that the US forces would have been met by suicide charges of old men and women, plus children, armed with no more then farm implements and sharpened bamboo.

So you just discount the testimony of luminaries like Dwight Eisenhower, Winston Churchill, George Marshall, Douglas McArthur, Curtis Le May and Henry Stimson. There is no doubt that they were used to send a warming to the Russians and because the military wanted to use their expensive toys!!

Which has nothing to do with what the Japanese civilian population were being trained for and / or what they intended to do.
 
Yes no doubt all of that is true however if they were told to stand down they would have as indeed history proved. Pretty much all of the major players at the time were against the use of nuclear bombs, so what do you know that they didn't? I wouldn't call Eisenhower, Churchill or McArthur liberals , unless you have a different definition to mine.

Please show me what history of Japan, at that time, would have suggested that the population of Japan would have surrendered and not fought>
Would that history contain what the civilians did on Saipan, where an estimated 1,000 committed suicide?
Or maybe Okinawa, where it's somewhere between 42,000 and 150,000 committed suicide or were "drafted by the Japanese military?

The Japanese worshiped their ruler as a deity and held to a belief of "honor", above all else.

Please tell me what information was available, AT THAT TIME, that shows Japan wasn't going to use their civilian population to try to repel any and all invaders.

They were the laws that made it possible boys aged 15 or older and girls aged 17 or older to be drafted into the army for actual battles. Those who escape the draft were punished by imprisonment.

The Japanese surrender, however, had forestalled the Allied invasion of the Japanese main islands, and therefore rendered these child soldiers unnecessary.

I've never seen anybody on a forum anywhere accept so many surrenders from folk who have wupped his ass.
