I disagree. The Russians had an ' agreement ' with the US that NATO would never attempt to encroach upon previously-Soviet buffer states after Gorbochev relaxed Russian control. NATO has broken that understanding.
The Russians had no option but to defend South Ossetia from Georgian aggression and almost the entire population of Crimea voted for renewed union with Russia. Crimea was always Russian until a drunken Kruschev- himself a Ukrainian- turned an unwilling Crimea over to Ukraine without even so much as a quorum at the Supreme Soviet. Eastern Ukrainians also want union with Russia but Putin has refused to comply for the sake of legality.
Russia was Syria's ally prior to the ' Arab Spring ' subversion by Israel and ' the West ' and Syria is Russia's only warm-water port. Even so, the Russians withdrew from Syria in order to allow events to take their natural course and has only recently intervened because the entire Western-orchestrated and illegal regime-change plan has become a giant clusterfuck. These are not the actions of imperialists.
I do agree Russia has strategic interests in the Uk - but it did sign the Budapest memorandum -in return for Uk giving up nukes
it agreed to territorial integrity and there are many instances of Russian spetsnaz forces ( non-insignia to boot) seen in the east.
Those free elections may or may not be valid, but I do agree there seems to be a plurality of Russian speaking citizens
who want alliance with Russia. The point is though the elections were simply a cover for the Russian incursion.

Russia has to prevent Syria becoming a failed state. If Syria was to collapse entirely then Israel and the US would be free to attack Iran- for the purposes of ' Israel's security '. Only the prospect of leaving Israel's back door open to Assad and Hizb'allah has prevented such an attack to date- that and Obama's statesmanship. Russia must save Syria and strengthen it - as Putin knows full well.
