A man accused of randomly killing six people in Michigan had a personal cache of weapons that included handguns and long guns, but there was nothing in his past that prevented him from owning as many guns as he could afford.

Authorities seized the gun collection after the weekend attacks around the Kalamazoo area.

With no criminal history or record of mental illness, Michigan residents who follow requirements can legally acquire any number of firearms.

“He was a law-abiding citizen up until he pulled the trigger on the first victim,” said Jonathan Southwick, owner of a gun store in Plainwell, 20 miles north of Kalamazoo. “There are no laws you could put into place to stop what had happened.”

Southwick said Dalton bought a jacket with an inside pocket designed for a handgun Saturday, just hours before the rampage.

“He talked with my manager for a bit, was laughing and joking a bit, gave him a one-armed hug — then proceeded to purchase the jacket and said he was going out to enjoy the weather,” Southwick recalled.

Dalton did not have a permit to carry a concealed weapon, Undersheriff Paul Matyas said.

Republican state Rep. Triston Cole said Michigan’s gun laws aren’t lenient. He notes that the state is among only a handful in which owners must register handguns with local police.

“It’s really important that we recognize this awful, senseless tragedy,” Cole said. “But you need to look at good policy and not react based on emotion to infringe upon our right to own firearms.”

The Michigan Uber driver charged with murdering six people changed vehicles after sideswiping a car at the start of the shooting spree, authorities said, adding that they hoped his phone would help establish a motive for the killings.

Jason Dalton, 45, was denied bail on Monday after a court hearing in which a detective testified that Dalton admitted to the five-hour shooting rampage over the weekend in Kalamazoo, about 150 miles west of Detroit.

Searching for a motive for the violence, investigators were focusing on a gun and a cellphone seized from Dalton and reports that he drove fares for the Uber car-hailing service in between the shooting episodes, said Paul Matyas of the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department.

Prosecutors say Dalton randomly shot at people at an apartment complex, a car dealership and a Cracker Barrel restaurant, killing six and wounding two. During the spree, he switched cars, moving from a silver Chevy Equinox to a darker colored Chevy HHR, both vehicles belonging to his family, Matyas said.

“Right after the first shooting at the apartments, he left the scene and sideswiped a car,” Matyas said. “So he switched from the Equinox to the HHR.”

One of the Uber customers he picked up just before the shootings started told WWMT-TV that Dalton got a call on his cellphone and subsequently “he started driving erratically, running stop signs.”

Matyas said investigators were focusing on Dalton’s ties to Uber and working to “track his phone calls, track his whereabouts” in the hours before his arrest.

Additional weapons were seized from the Dalton home, said Matyas, who declined further details. All of the guns were legally obtained and Dalton had no prior criminal record, authorities said.

My last statement stands. He had the right to buy them. He didn't have the right to do what he did dickhead.
