Have Republicans overestimated the conservatism of the base?

I don't know if I would vote for him again now that I know about the long term consequences of his economic policies but I do agree that he'd be well to the left of where the current base of the party is.

That's very interesting. Everyone is a product of their time so it would be interesting to see what positions Reagan would hold today. Part of what drew people to Reagan was his optimism and belief in America. Trump's campaign is about anger. Totally different.

Presidential nominee maybe. President? The numbers show that to be a long shot at best.

Another part that drew a lot of people to Reagan was that he was primarily focused on the economy and solutions to ending the stagflation situation, where as his opponents were focused on other issues. Reagan did resolve the stagflation issue by keeping Volker at the Fed (and essentially continuing Carters policies) but knowing now what I know about supply side economics, as it's been implemented as Federal policy, I couldn't in good conscience vote for a supply sider ever again.

If I remember correctly he focused a lot on foreign policy, the Cold War and Carter's weakness vis-a-vis Iran and the hostages.

He did but Reagans message was overwhelmingly economic. It's why I voted for him. While Carter and Bush and Dole and Kennedy were harping about Iran, foreign policy and the Cold War, Reagan was the only one at least attempting to offer solutions to the double digit stagflation of that period. It was the main reason I voted for him. I didn't give a rats ass about "the shining city on a hill" crap. In fact during his campaign Reagan had to seriously back down from his rhetoric on Iran as a very large number of people were concerned that he was going to get us into another Vietnam, vis-a-vis Iran and the hostages.
