24 is practically a senior citizen when it comes to heroin addiction. I am sorry for your family's ordeal. Unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of heroin addicts end up one way. It is a sad but true fact. Just say no.

yeah, heroin addiction seems pretty similar to being in a gang where the two basic options you have are jail or death. (not all of course but many/most)

I've only met this step brother three times. First time he seemed perfectly normal. The next two he had this look in his face and his eyes which only someone who has dealt with heroin (or other drugs) would understand. Not something I've seen before. It's like his face was hollowed out and while he was there physically he was somewhere else mentally. He was frail too. Just ugly situation.

It is a bad, bad thing - even if you kick a heroin addiction, it leaves heavy "scars" that never really go away.

And like you, I am sad but still somewhat impressed Scott Weiland made it to age 48. He was the last real, unapologetic American "rock star" in my book.
