Alleged Child Rapist Arrested in New York in Theft of 6 Rifles, 10 Handguns From Massachusetts Army Reserve Armory
A man facing child rape charges in Middlesex County is in custody for breaking into an armory in Worcester last weekend and stealing 16 military-grade weapons, federal officials said Thursday. The suspect was identified as James Walker Morales. He had allegedly been at the Lincoln Stoddard US Army Reserve Center in Worcester on Nov. 12 to obtain a copy of his discharge papers, according to an FBI affidavit made public Thursday.
The affidavit did not provide any details of Walker’s military service.
The armory was broken into last Saturday by someone who stole 10 Sig Sauer 9mm pistols and four M-4 combat rifles capable of firing a three-round burst with a single pull of the trigger, officials said.
It was not immediately known whether the weapons have been recovered.
Authorities have said they do not believe the theft was terrorism-related.
The 34-year-old Morales was linked to the crime by DNA evidence and data from a GPS monitoring bracelet he was ordered to wear in Middlesex Superior Court where he was indicted in May on charges of child rape and indecent assault and battery, records show.
Based on surveillance videos from a nearby store, the FBI said the suspect who committed the break-in and robbery was first seen in a car parked on North Lake Avenue near the armory at 6:43 p.m. Saturday. The suspect then made several trips from the car to the armory, sometimes while carrying duffel bags, before driving away at 12:08 a.m. Sunday.
According to an affidavit filed by FBI Special Agent Colgan Norman, data from the GPS monitoring device Walker was ordered to wear on his ankle shows him on North Lake Avenue in Worcester between 6:40 p.m. Saturday and 12:08 a.m. on Sunday. According to an FBI affidavit, an alarm was triggered at the facility at 9:07 p.m. Saturday indicating that a break-in had occurred in the weapons vault inside the armory. It wasn’t until Sunday at 7:30 a.m. that the break-in was reported by Army personnel, according to the affidavit.
According to the FBI, the thief got into the building by breaking into the kitchen through the window. Inside the building, the weapons vault, described as being as large as a shipping container, is located in the drill room of the armory, the FBI said. The thief climbed on top of the vault and used power tools to cut through “several layers of metal and wood’’ to reach the interior, the FBI said. “It is believed the perpetrator used a power saw and pry bar to cut through the ceilings of the weapons vault,’’ Norman wrote in an affidavit. “Tools marks demonstrating the use of a pry bar were found in and around the hole in the ceiling of the weapons vault.’’
The FBI said it recovered four bloodstains from the upper level and top of the weapons vault that were matched to Walker through a DNA analysis of his sample stored in the FBI’s CODIS database. In addition to the child rape accusation, Walker was convicted in 2013 in Cambridge District Court of aggravated assault and given a one year suspended sentence, the FBI said.
The 34-year-old was taken into custody by Nassau County police Wednesday night in Long Island near a BJ’s Wholesale store, officials said. The arrest of the man led police to evacuate a nearby movie theater while a K-9 dog made a precautionary search, officials said. Morales is in the custody of federal authorities. He is facing charges of unlawful possession of a machine gun, unlawful possession of stolen firearms, and theft of government property.
Morales was due back in Middlesex Court in Woburn on Monday in connection with the child rape charge and failed to show up. A warrant was issued for his arrest after he defaulted.
The FBI alleged that Morales cut the monitoring bracelet off Monday — after the break-in. Morales had also been ordered to provide state probation officials with cellphone numbers. Two of those cellphones were apparently used to track Morales down in Long Island. He is expected to appear Friday in US District Court in Islip, N.Y., officials said.
