Friday night’s edition of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, which is filmed live, saw the political satirist address the people of Paris. Then, Maher welcomed journalist and author Asra Q. Nomani, who is Muslim, for a sit-down interview prior to his panel.

Maher laid into radical Islam.

“How could moderates not stand up against Sharia Law, which is the law in so many Muslim countries, which is the law of oppression?” Maher said.

“I am absolutely sure that ISIS thinks that everything they do, every horrific crime, every atrocity, is an act of justice, and an act for god,” he continued.

Maybe it’s a small percentage who carry out terrorist acts, but it’s not a small percentage who believe in some of the illiberal ideas that support terrorists.”

Panelist Dylan Ratigan brought up the U.S. funding Saudi Arabia as one reason that Islamic terrorists are upset with America.

“That’s not what terrorists say,” said Maher. When you capture one, or when they leave a note, you know what they say? Because you’re in Muslim lands. I have a crazy idea: Why don’t we get out of Muslim lands?. But bombing them over there is what is causing the Paris thing to happen! That connection needs to be made. We don’t have to be bombing them there,” said Maher, before discussing how the U.S. military should vacate the Middle East and let other Middle East countries take on the fight against ISIS.

“We just need popcorn! Just sit back and watch this!”

Rand Paul is the only sane one on the con side. The rest are bloviating about xenophobic responses; invading, bombing, the usual.

I'll be interested to hear what Bernie has to say.

If the fear factor ratchets up and lasts until Election Day, Mann may get his wish.

I was pleased to hear what Rand Paul said. I wrongly thought all the candidates were on the same page with this.

Yeah, good idea.....and we could have stayed out of Europe in the 40's and just let Hitler murder more innocents for a decade or so....get the popcorn....

I don't believe there were roll call votes taken, so the best you can do is to probably just get the yeas and nays totals.....you'll have to do your own research, the bills were passed and FDR signed them into law.

and the 20's are far removed from the topic at hand.....circumstances change over 20 years.....after WWI Americans in general wanted no part of foreign wars....

W. Wilson, a Democrat was president at the start of WWI....both houses of congress was held by Democrats also.

When the war began in September 1939, most Americans, including politicians, demanded neutrality regarding Europe.[SUP] [/SUP]Although most Americans supported strong measures against Japan, Europe was the focus of the America First Committee.
[SUP][/SUP]

The America First Committee launched a petition aimed at enforcing the Neutrality Act and forcing President Roosevelt to keep America out of the war. They profoundly distrusted Roosevelt and argued that he was lying to the American people.

America First staunchly opposed the convoying of ships, the Atlantic Charter, and the placing of economic pressure on Japan.

In order to achieve the defeat of lend-lease and the perpetuation of American neutrality, the AFC advocated four basic principles:


  • The United States must build an impregnable defense for America.
  • No foreign power, nor group of powers, can successfully attack a prepared America.
  • American democracy can be preserved only by keeping out of the European war.
  • "Aid short of war" weakens national defense at home and threatens to involve America in war abroad.

Conservative commentator Pat Buchanan praised America First and used its name as a slogan. "The achievements of that organization are monumental," writes Buchanan, "By keeping America out of World War II until Hitler attacked Stalin in June 1941, Soviet Russia, not America, bore the brunt of the fighting, bleeding and dying to defeat Nazi Germany."

Their most vocal spokesman (who admired Hitler)?

Charles Lindbergh, Republican.

For crying out loud, you don't seriously believe the fantasy that the US defeated Hitler in World War II do you? It was the Red Army that beat Germany, not the US...
