what an overblown sense of pretentiousness

Former New York City mayor is pledging to spend $50 million this year to push gun control, the New York Times reports. For this and other deeds (such as taking on obesity and smoking), Bloomberg believes he's going to heaven.

“I am telling you if there is a God, when I get to heaven I’m not stopping to be interviewed. I am heading straight in. I have earned my place in heaven. It’s not even close,” Bloomberg told the Times.

Here's the full context of Bloomberg's heaven quotation:

Mr. Bloomberg was introspective as he spoke, and seemed both restless and wistful. When he sat down for the interview, it was a few days before his 50th college reunion. His mortality has started dawning on him, at 72. And he admitted he was a bit taken aback by how many of his former classmates had been appearing in the “in memoriam” pages of his school newsletter. But if he senses that he may not have as much time left as he would like, he has little doubt about what would await him at a Judgment Day. Pointing to his work on gun safety, obesity and smoking cessation, he said with a grin: “I am telling you if there is a God, when I get to heaven I’m not stopping to be interviewed. I am heading straight in. I have earned my place in heaven. It’s not even close.”

As for the gun control push, Bloomberg tells the paper he wants gun rights advocates to fear him.

Michael R. Bloomberg, making his first major political investment since leaving office, plans to spend $50 million this year building a nationwide grass-roots network to motivate voters who feel strongly about curbing gun violence, an organization he hopes can eventually outmuscle the National Rifle Association.

Mr. Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York, said gun control advocates need to learn from the N.R.A. and punish those politicians who fail to support their agenda — even Democrats whose positions otherwise align with his own.

“They say, ‘We don’t care. We’re going to go after you,’ ” he said of the N.R.A. “ ‘If you don’t vote with us we’re going to go after your kids and your grandkids and your great-grandkids. And we’re never going to stop.’ ”

He added: “We’ve got to make them afraid of us.”

Don't you just love Michael. He's such a swell guy. But I don't wish death on him ... just political discomfort.

I wonder if the IRS will hassle his grassroots network or go after him, his kids, and his grand kids like the NRA does. Oh wait, never mind. He votes left so he's in the clear.

[Lois Lerner]... as the IRS official in charge of the division that reviews applications for tax exemption, she had to try to figure out what Congress meant when it set up 501(c)(4) tax-exempt status for “social welfare” groups that don’t have political activity as their “primary purpose.” Does Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS, which spent $70 million in 2012, have a purpose other than politics? Does it heal the sick or help the poor?

For the record, the only group denied tax-exempt status in 2013 was "the Maine chapter of Emerge America, which trains Democratic women to run for office."
A progressive group.

At least they got a response as opposed to inaction or endless requirements for infkrmation.

The crap didn't hit the fan until 2013. However the issues started well before and came to a head in 2012 when the majority of the conservative groups were being curbed because of their name. When they're singling out groups because of their name alone it goes farther than questioning the groups intent. Putting their non profit certification in limbo while breezing through all but one liberal group in 2012. Not to mention the information that was leaked about various conservative groups in that time frame. Which is a felony by the way. Those are big problems. It's also a problem when they begin harassing citizens and their friends, and family. I'm sure Dr. Ben Carson would agree with me.

If I google "conservative groups targeted by the IRS" there will be numerous sites like Breitbart, HotAir, the Moonie Times etc. that are up in arms because groups with "Tea Party" or "patriot" in their names were scrutinized. If I google "liberal groups target by the IRS" there will be numerous sites like Huffpo, CNN, Salon etc. that are up in arms that groups with "progressive" or "blue state" or "anti-war" in their names were scrutinized. So I think it's disingenuous to say the conservatives are the more injured party when facts show that both were targeted. Conservatives were just quicker at making their umbrage public.

So you don't see it as a problem using a government agency to attack your political opponents?

that was going to be my question, is that no matter the politics is it still ok?

How do you get that from my post? I was simply responding to the noob's comments that conservative groups are targeted in greater numbers than liberal groups. Where is the attack though? If 501(c)(4) groups are tax exempt they should be scrutinized to be sure they comply with the law.

Said scrutiny is not applied evenly, it depends which party is in office.
