I understand, and if the State would provide the full cost of Defense that makes it more palatable.

Juries don't always get it right, and if you are subjected to 100 frivolous lawsuits, you are likely to lose one of them.

why should a cop or a prosecutor be better protected from/by the law than we the people? people are wrongly convicted as well, yet they are left with little to no recourse. did the founders set up a nation of freedom or a nation of despotism?

1) I don't think we always should use the founders perspective for every decision.
2) The best reason to give some level of immunity is a practical one, we need good people willing to take certain jobs that will lead to a huge amount of unjustified lawsuits if the job is done correctly.
