Obama's speech on minimum wage

I was watching CNN and heard he wants to bring minimum wage to $10:10 that's at par with Canada.

Now obviously I support this. I have been the HUGEST opponent of "trickle down" economics that only aids the rich. I support TRICKLE UP economics. Give the consumer more money, the consumer consumes more, promoting more manufacturing and thus more jobs and thus more money for the companies. This new North American attitude of wanting to get rich over night is a criminal attitude. Investments are stable when they are long term.

I pretty much believe the Stock Exchange is just another way for the rich to get their hands in our pockets and should be abolished, though if it has to exist? There should be minimums on how long you have to hold a stock before you sell it. This buying and selling stocks in the blink of an eye creates unstable markets.

Now the Republicans are trying to stop the raise. Now what working class individual in their right mind whether republican or democrat wouldn't support this??? I'd say every non-union middle class worker should be filled with glee.

I have made minced meet out of famous economist Friedman's argument against minimum wage, who the rich OBVIOUSLY applauded.

Now this is where I have a problem with it. If minimum wage is increased to $10:10? Do you think the business men will cut their profit margins or add it to the price, increasing the cost of living? Then your back to square one. And even worse for those who are jobless.

It would also obviously increase tax revenue for the Government. Would the government give it back to the businesses like it usually does via loop holes, tax deductions and rebates(That trickle down economics again). Would it go to more social programs?

The only way it would work is if employers lowered their profit margins and we know that the rich are all about getting richer not giving away wealth. When they give away wealth(Charity) it's for tax deductions, therefore they are actually still gaining wealth.

What's the other option? Reduce the over all cost of living so you don't have to increase minimum wage. (This is what I want to happen to America's health care) like what happened in Canada. America's healthcare is one of the most expensive health cares in the world. Americans pay much more for the same service than anywhere else. It's capitalism, they charge more if they think they can get more......

Or cut tax benefits/write offs for the super wealthy, and use the extra added tax income(also from minimum wage increase) to subsidize the necessities of life, to make them cheaper.

Also if you raise the minimum wage, it would make domestically made American products over priced. Especially with this new borderless free trade free market garbage that is being passed as capitalism. You wont compete with cheap foreign goods. You'd have to reintroduce tariffs on foreign goods. Protecting American jobs(protectionism).

Is the American public willing to give up economic sovereignty via this nonsense called free trade/free markets?

What are your thoughts?

If you "give" the consumer more money then the ensuing inflation makes whatever they are currently buying more expensive generally to a wash. Actions do not happen a vacuum nor do they happen without reactions. Consumer needs to "earn" more wjich is to say elevate himself out of the lower wage position he is in to another that pays better. There are no magic tricks available here.

Not if you increase supply at the same time.

Only one guy? Where are all the arm chair economists?

the current system of government run economics we have today will not allow your plan to work. 'giving' the consumer more money will only increase the costs of basics and property, thus negating any benefit you propose.

Government run economics? Don't you mean fascist run economics? Where the 1% elites own all major industry and the government(politicians)are in their pockets? And are used to protect their interests?

Anyways back to the subject. Why do you believe it will increase the costs of necessities and property???

We've tried trickle down economics and everything still seems to go up. I want to try trickle UP economics. If giving the people more money increases demand and thus cost, that tells us that Capitalism is a garbage system. Simply because no matter how much money you make, it will never be enough. Like I said before, the carrot and stick trick. You can chase it but you wont catch it.

Also if you actually read the entire OP? You would see I spoke of using extra taxes collected on increased wages + eliminating tax breaks for corporations(increasing even more tax revenue), to subsidize the necessities. Also home prices can be capped. it's ridiculous that homes are sold MANY, MANY times more then their actual value. But hey that's capitalism...or is it? Try opening up a new home building company and see how much red tape you will have to go through. In the end, it wouldn't be worth it.

You think they will increase supply knowing it wont sell ? I dont think so. That "earn" has to occur to change consumption. Thats why as new labor hits the market whose skills are increasingly lower the income disparity grows. No earn.

yes, GOVERNMENT run economics. in case you haven't been paying attention, we have MILLIONAIRES in congress and the senate. these MILLIONAIRES run the economy, through taxes, penalties, fines, criminal codes, regulations, etc..... Now, how do you think YOU are going to make ANY difference convincing them that your plan works? do you really think that these MILLIONAIRE politicians have any desire to help you when you can't give them anything that the other 1% of them can?

preaching to the choir. i've mentioned numerous times how the establishment politicians do everything they can to prevent the commoners from becoming rich. It's amusing to watch the liberal constituency willfully blind themselves to the fact that they help them do it in the name of 'safety'.

Hmmm ok so you want to drive more capital overseas with caps and even higher taxes. How did that work out for Venezuela ?

What they do is they limit supply which increases demand(and thus increase price). That's capitalism. If people had more money they would consume more, therefore the companies can make more and sell more. Everybody wins. Remember the real money is in volume.

These millionaires don't finance their own campaigns. They are financed by even richer millionaires/billionaires. Well we can give them our vote. For example. Cheney is a Halliburton puppet.

The point is that it wont necessarily increase the costs of necessities and properties with my over all plan.

They use all kinds of strategies. Especially fear tactics.

If those patriotic traitors want to leave America they can do so and hard working Americans will pick up where they left off and rack in the rewards. The fact that these wealthy people can still do business outside of America, and bring in products without penalty and disguise it as capitalist free markets to fool the people, really shows how clueless Americans are.

Sure, raise the wage. I'm all for getting rid of burger flippers and replacing them with robots. Same with bank tellers. Mechanize the workforce I say.

Technology was looked after to ease man's workload(it was supposed to reduce hours spent by man working), but the rich usually end up buying it up and using it to enslave us. And you are all for that right?

unfortunately, obama can only change the minimum wage for federal employees.

we really need to raise it for the entire nation, but the repugs will not allow it to happen...

Says who? In Canada minimum wage is $10.75 and the Government enforces it. You cannot by law pay someone less.

Only lefties consider what we have as free markets. "Hard working Americans" will do nothing without capital but you seek to drive that capital elsewhere. No factories with no equipment and no raw materials means people standing around looking at one another. You may not like it but capital is what makes the world go around. If you think evil American capitalists abuse workers ask yourself if you would prefer working for Chinese task masters....

well what do we expect....obama and his cabal have not spent more than a minute of their collective lives working in the real world, that being the private sector.....they have never met a payroll, been accountable to a budget, produced a product....nothing.....and these people are now responsible for this nation.....given obama's actual performance to date he has demonstrated unfit to sit the help desk at your local ymca and yet this nation placed him in the oval office....the result of ignorance, institutionalized handout mentality and of course he is the wet dream of the self anointed white liberal elite.....intellectually corrupt, morally dysfunctional and just short of half as smart as they think they are.....you see, a drunk can get sober, a thug can have an epiphany but stuck on stupid, well there really is no cure....they just remain stuck on stupid....

What a steaming load. Talk about being stuck on stupid.

President Obama has never received a paycheck from a profitmaking business in his entire life.
Joe Scarborough on Tuesday, April 7th, 2009 in a discussion on MSNBC

...It's true that Obama's most well-known jobs, as a community organizer and politician, have been for governments or nonprofit organizations. But Obama has worked for plenty of private companies, from Baskin-Robbins to Business International Corporation. He worked at law firms. He was a telemarketer. He worked construction. He sold island trinkets in Hawaii.

In his diatribe, Scarborough remarked that "if you're going to run the most complex financial sectors in the world, I hope that you have at least received a paycheck for working at a burger stand."

We're not sure whether the deli at which Obama worked as a young man in Hawaii sold burgers, but it's entirely possible.

Below, compiled from and cross-checked among a host of sources, is what we believe to be the most thorough account of the president's work history. (Several details from his early years are unknown, and will remain so for now; the White House did not respond to our request to verify the accuracy of our list and fill in the blanks.)

1975 or 1976 — ice cream scooper, Baskin-Robbins — Honolulu — Obama claims to have lost his taste for ice cream during this, his first job, the duration of which is not publicly known.
Date unknown — deli counter clerk, business name unknown — Honolulu — Obama had a summer job at a deli counter in Hawaii, making sandwiches, his spokesman said during the presidential campaign.
1980 — gift shop sales clerk, business name unknown — Honolulu — Obama worked at a gift shop in Hawaii selling island souvenirs the summer after his freshman year at Occidental College in California.
Sometime between 1981-1983 — construction worker, business name unknown — New York — Obama cleared a construction site for a summer on Manhattan's Upper West Side while attending Columbia University, the Associated Press reported. Obama referred to this job in Dreams From My Father .
Sometime between 1981-1983 — position unknown, company unknown — New York — During his years at Columbia University, Obama worked one summer for a private company processing health records of either police or firefighters, his spokesman said during the presidential campaign.
Sometime between 1981-1983 — telemarketer, company unknown — New York — During one school year at Columbia, Obama was a telemarketer in midtown Manhattan selling New York Times subscriptions over the phone, his spokesman said during the presidential campaign.
1983-84 — research assistant, Business International Corporation — New York — At this firm that helped American companies do business abroad, Obama was a researcher and writer for a reference service called Financing Foreign Operations; among his duties was writing a newsletter called Business International Money Report.
1985 — project coordinator, New York Public Interest Research Group — New York — Obama mobilized student volunteers at City College in Harlem for NYPIRG, a nonprofit organization that promotes consumer, environmental and government reform. He promoted activism around issues such as mass transit, higher education, tuition, financial aid and recycling.
1985-1988 — community organizer, Developing Communities Project — Chicago — Obama advocated for asbestos removal, job training and public-works services at this community organization on Chicago's South Side.
1988 — research assistant, Lawrence Tribe — student assistant to this Harvard Law School professor and renowned constitutional scholar.
1989 — summer associate, Hopkins & Sutter — Obama held this job the summer between his first and second years of law school.
1990 — summer associate, Sidley & Austin — After his second year of law school Obama was a summer associate for one of the world's oldest and largest law firms, where he met Michelle Robinson, his future wife.
1990-1991 — president, Harvard Law Review — Obama was the first African-American to hold this prestigious position.
1991-1992 — executive director, Project Vote — Ran a campaign that registered nearly 150,000 black voters for the 1992 elections.
1993-2004 — associate and partner (starting 1996), Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Galland — Chicago — defended clients ranging from landlords to a securities trader, and handled employment-discrimination and voting-rights cases at this Chicago law firm.
1993-2004 — part-time lecturer, University of Chicago Law School — Chicago — lectured on constitutional law.
1995 — author, Times Books — published memoir, Dreams From My Father.
1997-2004 — state senator, Illinois — senator from Illinois' 13th District on Chicago's South Side.
2005-2008 — U.S. Senator — represented Illinois in the U.S. Senate.
2006 -- Author, Random House — published The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream.
2009 — President, United States — Washington — In his current position, Obama is the head of state of the most powerful country in the world. He runs the executive branch and serves as commander in chief of the armed forces.

There you have it. By our count, Obama earned paychecks from 11 for-profit businesses, compared to just six nonprofit or government employers. We understand the point that the most well-known part of Obama's work history is in positions outside the private sector, but Scarborough was absolute in his declaration. "Not one check," from a for-profit enterprise, he said. We like Joe. He's hosted segments on PolitiFact. But this claim is False.

son that is great, do you think that you can get your crosschecked sources to produce a long form birth certificate, grades from harvard, lsat, columbia, passport used to go to pakistan and student loan info....by the way you have him working at places without names, dates, function performed unclear....kinda sounds like his current employment record....and does having someone make up a story about your life, write it for you and then selling it to liberals waiting breathlessly to fall in love with a clean and articulate black man; does that really count as a job.....
