Put your hoodies down, Indiana mall tells shoppers for their 'safety & well-being'

It's an old policy, but new signs are catching the eye of mall walkers in Indiana.

"For the safety & well-being of everyone, please lower your hoodie," say signs posted throughout Mounds Mall, ending with a courteous, "Thank you."

Local law enforcement requested the signs, the mall's general manager, Braun Roosa, told The Herald Bulletin. The signs are a safety measure, Roosa said, and the mall plans on removing them once the weather warms up.
Like most businesses, the Anderson mall requires shoppers to wear shoes and shirts. The rules continue: "Appropriate, non-offensive attire; no hoodies or other apparel that will disguise identity."

However, some shoppers believe the signs target young people and are offensive.

"There ain't nothing on there about ski masks or beanies. Why does it matter about hoodies?" Ranny Hinton Jr., 21, asked the Bulletin.

Mounds Mall may be the only shopping center with the unusual requirement that Jesse Tron, the spokesperson for the International Council of Shopping Centers, is aware of.

The rule has been in place since 2004, Roosa said. He told WISH-TV that people who don't follow the policy will be asked to leave the shopping center.

No specific incident sparked the new signs, Roosa said.
