Hands off, Argies! These'll soon be the richest islands on Earth

Then don't talk rubbish, the Argies haven't a cat in hell's chance as you well know.
It's the other way around. The US won't tolerate that level of British presence in the western hemisphere. You can drill a few wells near the Island but the US would not permit the Brits to enforce sub soil/subteranion rights in the region. The era of colonialism is over. The US official position is for all three parties to negotiate. Deal with it or deal with the consequences. President Obama is not as clueless on Foreign policy as President Reagan was.

That's bullshit Mott, there is nothing they can do. The Monroe doctrine is 19th US gunboat diplomacy.

You're kidding yourself there. The official US Policy on the Falklands is negotiation. It is no longer neutrality. If Argentina opposed exploitation of oil resources in and around the Falklands by the UK and the UK tried to enforce their will on the region by armed forces the US would intervene and the UK would not exactly be powerless to stop the US but they would be at a serious disadvantage.

The US has historically sided with the Latin American nations in colonial disputes with European colonial powers. Reagan was an exception to long standing US foreign policy.

As I said, the age of Colonialism is over and Obama is not Reagan. You're deluding yourself that the US would permit that.

That is craziest thing I've ever heard you say, that is beyond nuts. This has nothing to do with colonialism as I have stated before, the Falkland islanders want to remain British they had a poll there only last year and only three voted against. Anyway even if there was something in what you had to say, which there isn't, they would only have to declare themselves a separate country. If you really think that there would ever come a time when the US would attack the Falklands then I despair. Argentina does oppose oil exploration, it is the real reason they attacked in the first place.

It may sound crasy to you but the US does not want the UK exploiting resources off the shore of the Falklands and would prevent the UK from doing so by use of military force. The US does understand that the people of the Falklands prefer British rule and that US policy contradicts their self determination rights but the age of colonialism is over and the Falkland Islands will have a more stable future if they establish relations with Argentina, their only real neighbor. It is time for the UK, Argentina and the people of the Falklands to work out a new agreement.

I am sorry Mott, I like you a lot and usually respect your opinion but that is just fanciful nonsense. What the hell do you think oil companies have been doing for the last decade anyway? You keep repeating the same meaningless mantra about colonialism, that is just crap. There won't be another war anyway as the Argentine doesn't have the capability anymore. As for negotiation that was the same in the Reagan era as now, nothing has changed. Oh by the way will you be giving Hawaii back or urging Spain to give Ceuta and Melilla back to the Moroccans?

It suited his need at the time.

Rest assured Desh, real scientists use wiki to explain things to lay people constantly.

Some yes, but I knew plenty of college professors who were so against Wiki in principle that they would badmouth it at every chance. There was even one douche who would go onto it for fun just to mess stuff up.

I done a fair few edits to Wiki articles, I am registered with them so they rarely get reversed.

Wiki is usually fine for non contentious subjects, it is in the realms of politics and history where the trouble starts. At least they are able to lock articles now and track IP addresses. The main reason I used it here was because Desh seems to have implicit trust in its veracity and we all know what a stickler she is for the facts.

Had to share this, a friend took the photo a few days ago.
