i will agree that people calling him a thug based on the clip is a major overreaction.
Exactly.

Nope. What he's saying is you can say something sexit or racist without being sexit or racist. It's a great point and one that serves to make you feel less defensive. I think
Maybe people like you and grind want to feel defensive though.
this is very interesting. thank you.
Thug is officially not on the racist words master list. I think we can now call this case-closed.
Yeah, because the only Native American tribe that had African descendant members clearly are the racists here and use "good ones" regularly to describe people of minority status. Dung, quit playing "gotcha" and start holding a conversation.
Thank you, leaningright, for that thoughtful post. In my view, the standards applied to athletes are asinine in general. Looking at the people you mentioned, Ben Roethlesberger is a rapist. I mean, yeah, it's OK to $&@% on him. Chris Christie is the governor of one of the larger states and has been talked about as a potential presidential candidate. Mitch McConnell is the Senate Minority Leader. Maxine Waters was a member of the US House of Representatives. Richard Sherman is 25 and plays football for a living.
Also, too, and just out of curiosity, where does SF's behavior rank with respect to your standards of acceptability?
it's in response to your "i dont know why it's so difficult to grasp"... we get what you are saying, we just don't agree.
You don't agree that a person who isn't racist can say something racist? Oh okay.
Anyway, this is a fascinating thread and I have been thinking about it on my drive back to my office. I think the reactions in this thread displayed by Grind (arrogantly stating what he's not going to do), and Superfreak, et el, are really the last gasps of the white male hegemony. The death throes really.
Because you are going to. Here's why. This war was fought and won long ago, and all that remains are some skirmishes. I would say the defining battle in the war was won in 1991 during the Thomas hearings. That looked like a win for you guys on its face, after all, Thomas got his seat...but it was a huge loss. Any one working at that time can testify to what a loss it was. The changes were fast, furious, and dead serious.
I invite anyone here to check out a fortune 500 company's employee handbook and HR guidelines and rules. There are so many rules against things I don't personally find offensive. So if you think I'm tough, wait.
Every day there is another story about some clueless white dude who made a sexist or racist joke in a company email and their ass is fired. Same with white women send racist jokes. Fired. There is no meeting. There is no, hey let's get superfreak's take on this...no, did anyone check with Grind? There is no, hey let's ask the internet.
Fired.
The same goes for owners of companies. They face boycotts and economic repercussions. Corporations will immediately withdraw their ad dollars when someone says something racist or sexist.
The fact is, this war was won and you guys tow the line every day. You can't say the things you (I speak here of the angry white male who is ubiquitous on the internet) say online. You will not be hired if it's found on your facebook page, you will be fired if you're already working there, you will not get promotions, businesses will shun you, you will suffer great economic hardship. You all tow the line. And this is the last battlefield and really the only place left where you guys can talk shit...and note that it's all anonymously. But that's all it is. Shit talking from a dead empire. That's just the fact jack. In real life you guys tow the line, and that's what you're really angry about. But you'll continue towing it.
Have a great day!
Translation: "I am going to go on a long rant about sexual harassment and racism in the workplace and pretend that means any word I deem racist/sexist in reality will get you guys fired if you say it"

Keep your day job you suck as a translator.
I am not the arbitrator of what is and isn't racist. This is a conversation that the gentleman in question has started himself by objecting to being termed a thug. If society decides that calling black males thugs is racist, you will abide. It has nothing to do with Darla. Darla is just the easiest person for you to take your frustrations out on. If a black client comes in with money to invest and makes an off hand comment about thug being racist, your ass will smile and nod. Society will decide and the market place will enforce.
for someone that feels the war has been won, she sure does fucking complain a lot. lol.
The Human Stain is interesting novel by Phillip Roth about a professor at a liberal arts college in New England who is accused of racism and subsequently resigns because he referred to two absent black students in his class as "spooks" (as in specters, ghosts, apparitions) without ever having set eyes on them. As it turns out, the professor is actually a light-skinned black man who adopted a white (Jewish) racial identity after WWII (I think). It's worth a read.
Very true...
She probably has a word of the day calendar and each day she adds a secret racist/sexist 'code word' that she envisions as da evilz for white men to say
