I've always been a proponent of laws against allowing anybody to marry until they are an adult. The idea that a 16 year old is considered capable of making those kinds of life altering and lifelong decisions is actually absurd. Their brain hasn't developed past the invulnerability complex that teens so often have...

That being said, many places in the US it is legal to marry when you are 16, some places even as young as 14 with "parental consent". (As if they are slaves and can be bought and sold).
 
It has always been common in the rural communities to marry young. It's only a big deal for the leftist rabble rousers to use to demonize Phil. Sick people.

I would say that looking at the younger generation and life expectancy through the lens of today you make a fair argument. However, there were solid reasons for allowing them to marry at sixteen, even if you don't agree.

I point to the life expectancy, which in 1900 was a mere 48 years old for a male and 51 for a female. So if one married at 16, their life was already 1/3 over

I would argue that they were much more mature at 16 than our infantilized youth that has to get a medal for just participating. They lived a pretty hard life.

Lastly, life is all about procreation. Again given a life expectancy of 51 years old, it isn't like women could have waited until their 30s to start having kids.

Back when Phil and Kay got married, particularly in the South, it was no thing to be married that young. That people are trying to make a big deal about it today shows how shallow and lacking in thought they really are.

Of course as I said before, this isn't about some moral objection to marrying young, this is merely the current cudgel with which to attack Phil Robertson

He also has no daughters which might change his perspective. I don't know if he has granddaughters, but wonder if he does, if he will be marrying them off at 15 or 16.

His brand of fundamentalism appears to be in the " keep 'em barefoot and pregnant" club.

All of this has been great marketing!

He's not backwards. He's happy and so is his family and that's what is important. Knowing people like Phil and my own kin, we pretty much think progressives are nasty stupid creatures.

So... Phil is a paragon of virtue to the right when he is bashing gays, so when he is advocating pedophilia, that's still cool with them, it seems.

It is as if the right doesn't REALLY have a moral compass in play on this issue.... just a moral windsock filled with the hot air of their faux righteous indignation.

Phil didn't bash gays. He was quoting scrpture. You know that girls marrying young in rural poor areas is nothing new. At least they aren't on welfare so it's no one's business. Work on all those teen pregnancies on welfare.
