Florida High School Named After KKK Founder -- in 2013?!!

And we still have a public school in NYC named after one of the Puerto Rican separatists who tried to assassinate President Truman.

Liberals have no concern. To the contrary, they're the ones who named the school.

As always, one man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist.

Perhaps Mr. Taft can start a petition on Change.org about the NY school and see about getting the name replaced with another one.

I am surprised, though, that Mr. Taft isn't applauding an assassination attempt on a Democratic president rather than criticizing the separatist who tried it.

About everything in West Virginia is named for a KKK leader named Byrd. Odd how some people forget that Jim Crow laws were a northern thing. Ignorance is epidemic.

There's also a public housing development named after one of them:

NAMED AFTER: PEDRO ALBIZU CAMPOS (1891-1964) – Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, educated at Harvard University, Albizu Campos joined the Nationalist Party in 1924 and was the most prominent independentista of his time. During World War I he enlisted in the U.S. Army and finished his military service as a First Lieutenant. He was jailed from 1936-47 for advocating the violent overthrow of the U.S. administration of Puerto Rico. He masterminded a 1950 nationalist uprising and was accused of being behind the October 1950 assassination attempt on President Truman. He spent his final years in prison. Pedro Albizu Campos Plaza is in Manhattan.

One Jacksonville resident launched a Change.org petition that has so far garnered over 150,000 signatures, asking the Duval County School Board to change the name.

It's too bad General Forrest wasn't given the rank of Lieutenant General and given command of the confederate western forces because the confederacy could have won the war!

Update. Who said internet petitions don't work?

Florida school will drop Confederate Nathan B. Forrest's name

(CNN) -- Fifty-four years after the Duval County, Florida, school board ignored the wishes of students and named a Jacksonville high school for a controversial Confederate general, the school will be getting a new name.

The school board voted 7-0 Monday to change the name of Nathan B. Forrest High School after the current school year ends. Officials will choose between the names Westside and Firestone in January...

The name-change was spearheaded by parent Ty Richmond, whose Change.org petition amassed 162,150 signatures.

Political correctness wins again. The school board made up of cowardly governmental serfs caved.

What Ken didn't tell you...

The school opened in 1959 as Forrest High School.

It was not re-named to "defy" integration, as his link says.

It is one of 2 schools named for Forrest in the USA.

There have been many attempts to force the school to change the name.

All have failed.

Currently, over 1800 students attend Forrest, 54% of whom are African-American.

As far as I know, neither Ken or Christie live in Duval County.

The school changed the name because of political correctness and you couldn't tell me what the original clan was because you're a (Lincoln) republican who plays PC games like the liberals.

Now, now; you know how much Kenny hates the truth or anything connected to honesty. He caint hep it; he's a brain dead hyper partisan stuck on permanent stupid whose main claim to fame on the forum is cluelessly parroting leftist canards like a trained circus monkey.

Cut the dimwit some slack; he really is THAT simple and stupid.

Ya'll need to learn some history. Nathan Bedford Forest was not the founder of the KKK. Forest agreed to take a leadership role in the KKK after it was founded as a political resistance group to Federal reconstruction occupation force. When the KKK began to evolve into a racist terrorist organization Bedford quit in disgust and publicly disavowed anything to do with the organization and let it be publicly known that he thought they were cowards for their terrorist activities. There are many critcisms that are true about Forest. He was a slave owner and trader prior to the war. He was also responsible for a massacre by troops under his command but that was true of virtually all the Confedrate commanders including Lee.

Forest was also one the greatest men of that era. A self taught military man he devloped many of the tactics of the mobile infantry used to this day. He was the only Confederate commander who was not defeated in the field. Forest was an unquallified genius who shared a lot in common with the other self taught genius of that era, Lincoln.

Forest was an ulnlettered man and a product of his environment who rose far beyond his mean origins to become a great Amrican success story. To besmirch his reputation cause people don't know of his true involvement with the KKK before it became a terrorist organization is hardly fair.

Bravo; you have garnered new found respect from me aside from the fact we seldom agree politically. I will never call you a dimwit again; this was an intelligent, honest post.

Using that same logic should everything in West Virginia named for Robert Byrd be changed on the grounds that he was a member of the KKK? And not just a member but a recruiter a Grand Kleagel.

If not. Why not?

Clearly not because Robert Byrd acknowledged his mistakes and went on to correct them. I believe people can be redeemed and go on to honor themselves by good, even if they once did something misguided. Additionally, Robert Byrd was in the KKK, not the founder of the KKK. When you name something after Robert Byrd you are not honoring that part of the man. When you name something after Nathan Forrest, you are honoring that part of the man, because that was the overriding "accomplishment" of his life.

Learn to understand basic shit.

So, even if true, that makes it right?

In 1875, Forrest demonstrated that his personal sentiments on the issue of race now differed from that of the Klan, when he was invited to give a speech before an organization of black Southerners advocating racial reconciliation, called the Independent Order of Pole-Bearers Association.

At this, his last public appearance, he made what the New York Times described as a "friendly speech" during which, when offered a bouquet of flowers by a black woman, he accepted them as a token of reconciliation between the races and espoused a radically progressive (for the time) agenda of equality and harmony between black and white Americans.

His speech was as follows:

"Ladies and Gentlemen I accept the flowers as a memento of reconciliation between the white and colored races of the southern states. I accept it more particularly as it comes from a colored lady, for if there is any one on Gods' earth who loves the ladies I believe it is myself.

This day is a day that is proud to me, having occupied the position that I did for the past twelve years, and been misunderstood by your race. This is the first opportunity I have had during that time to say that I am your friend. I am here a representative of the southern people, one more slandered and maligned than any man in the nation.

I will say to you and to the colored race that men who bore arms and followed the flag of the Confederacy are, with very few exceptions, your friends.

I have an opportunity of saying what I have always felt, that I am your friend, for my interests are your interests, and your interests are my interests.

We were born on the same soil, breathe the same air, and live in the same land. Why, then, can we not live as brothers?

I will say that when the war broke out I felt it my duty to stand by my people.

When the time came I did the best I could, and I don't believe I flickered. I came here with the jeers of some white people, who think that I am doing wrong. I believe that I can exert some influence, and do much to assist the people in strengthening fraternal relations, and shall do all in my power to bring about peace.

It has always been my motto to elevate every man, to depress none. I want to elevate you to take positions in law offices, in stores, on farms, and wherever you are capable of going.

I have not said anything about politics today. I don't propose to say anything about politics. You have a right to elect whom you please; vote for the man you think best, and I think, when that is done, that you and I are freemen. Do as you consider right and honest in electing men for office.

I did not come here to make you a long speech, although invited to do so by you. I am not much of a speaker, and my business prevented me from preparing myself. I came to meet you as friends, and welcome you.

I want you to come nearer to us. When I can serve you I will do so.

We have but one flag, one country; let us stand together. We may differ in color, but not in sentiment. Use your best judgement in selecting men for office and vote as you think right.

Many things have been said about me which are wrong, and which white and black persons here, who stood by me through the war, can contradict.

I have been in the heat of battle when colored men, asked me to protect them. I have placed myself between them and the bullets of my men, and told them they should be kept unharmed.

Go to work, be industrious, live honestly and act truly, and when you are oppressed I'll come to your relief.

I thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for this opportunity you have afforded me to be with you, and to assure you that I am with you in heart and in hand."
