The Chris Christie example
John Anzalone, a Democratic political consultant and pollster, said what African Americans hear from Republicans is at odds with the heart-to-heart connection Towns advocates. Instead, they hear what Anzalone called “a constant venomous attack on President Obama.” He believes the negative drumbeat drowns out any outreach efforts by the GOP.
Anzalone said it’s not that Republicans disagree with Obama’s policies.
“They attack his intent and motives,” Anzalone said. “That’s where they lose people.”
Anzalone said black support for Chris Christie, New Jersey’s Republican governor, is an example of why that matters. Last year, Christie drew attention when he praised and thanked Obama for the president’s personal involvement in the federal government’s help after Hurricane Sandy.
When Christie was re-elected in November, he received 21 percent of the black vote. That might sound low, but it’s twice the share of black votes Republicans usually get, Anzalone said. Christie also got 51 percent of the Hispanic vote.
