Rape insurance? What fresh hell is this in the latest conservative battle against women? I thought they topped themselves with "creepy Uncle Sam", boy was I wrong.

"A legislative ballot initiative to ban abortion coverage in health insurance plans and require women to buy what opponents call “rape insurance” was approved by Michigan’s Secretary of State this week and is expected by many to become law because it cannot be vetoed by Gov. Rick Snyder (R).

On Monday, the Michigan Secretary of State certified that the group Michigan Right to Life had enough signature for the legislature to take up the measure. The group turned in 315,477 signatures, but only 258,088 — or 3 percent of the state’s voters — were needed. Snyder vetoed a similar bill last year, but Michigan’s constitution does not give him the authority to sign or veto legislative initiatives.

The initiative would require that all health plans — not just plans under the Affordable Care Act — be stripped of any abortion coverage, even in the cases of rape or incest. Women would have to purchase a separate rider to receive abortion coverage.

Because women could not purchase the coverage after they were raped, critics have referred to the rider as “rape insurance.”

“It’s not like, oh, I was raped and so now I’ll buy this rider,” Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan Director of Government Relations Meghan Groen told RH Reality Check. “Nobody is anticipating being a victim of crime.”

so now you DO have a problem with the government regulating the health insurance industry????

would you people make up your frikkin minds please

why call it rape insurance when it doesn't provide you with rapes.....it provides you with an abortion so call it abortion insurance......or you could call it baby killing insurance I suppose......

this is ridiculously naive of her. we have crime, rampant in some areas, and yet people like her don't anticipate being a victim but will bitch about the government not protecting her if she should ever become one. then probably has the temerity to suggest that people who DO anticipate being a victim and prepare for it 'live in all consuming fear' so they can mask their own cowardice.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding something, if so feel free to explain. It sounds like the measure is going to be enacted without being put to a vote. Yes? No?

"The article says "the group Michigan Right to Life had enough signature for the legislature to take up the measure. The group turned in 315,477 signatures, but only 258,088 — or 3 percent of the state’s voters — were needed."

Snyder vetoed a similar bill last year, but Michigan’s constitution does not give him the authority to sign or veto legislative initiatives.

...Michigan Right to Life spokesperson Pam Sherstad insisted to the Detroit Free Press that the measure would pass if it was taken up by the legislature because a majority of the lawmakers had already signed the petition that was turned into the Secretary of State."

Of course. Let's add insult to injury. A woman becomes a crime victim and if she gets pregnant as a result of the crime, she needs insurance should she want an abortion.

Shit. It's like that saying "if men could become pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament." You guys don't care what you have to do to keep women in their place.

I thought libertarians were pro-choice. Why should someone have to pay a penalty for being a crime victim?

It does seem absurd that a rape victim should have to pay for the abortion as well, that is just crazy.

And Pmp's comment "actually I have insurance that covers me if I get robbed....." is irrelevant. The insurance covers his stolen goods. It's not paying for the docs to sew him up if he gets beaten to a pulp during the robbery.

Jesus fucking Christ Libertarians are retarded.

Just because you think all government regulations are bad doesn't mean we think all our good. Learn basic logic, and then come back.

You're the coward, not us. You're a traitor and coward, like all rightists.

Yes, you are misunderstanding it....it must pass the legislature and if it does not it would be voted on by all the voters of MI.....

So you can see its chance of becoming law is slim to none.....

The claim that a majority of the lawmakers had already signed the petition is unbelievable, I'd have to see absolute proof of that....

Some "Right to Life" groups on the right are as nutty as some idiot groups on the left....

....besides, it seems UN-Constitutional to prohibit insurance from covering anything they want to cover...but then
that could work both ways in the gov. demanding that they cover other issues they don't want to cover....
