San Francisco mulls ban on releasing butterflies at events

San Francisco has made headlines for the numerous things it has banned recently, from toys in fast-food meals to cats being de-clawed.

Now, the city is setting its sights on another common practice: the release of butterflies at weddings and other special events.

The San Francisco Commission on the Environment, which supports a ban on the release of commercially bred butterflies, unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday night that orders the Department of the Environment to work with conservationists and local lawmakers before pursing formal legislative action.

The resolution states the commission supports a ban because the practice of releasing the insects at weddings and other celebrations can negatively impact the indigenous population and hamper conservation efforts.

“Many San Franciscans believe that butterflies are animals to be respected and valued as part of the city’s natural heritage and should not be used as decorations or for entertainment,” the resolution states.

L.A. trying to snuff out e-cigarette sales

Calling it a gateway to a future cigarette smoking, the Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday took the first steps to ban e-cigarettes — which turn liquid nicotine into a vapor smokers inhale through an atomizer — by voting to impose strict restrictions on how and where the products can be sold.

“Today is a vital step forward in the cause of public health,” Councilman Paul Koretz said before the council’s 15-0 vote to treat e-cigarettes as if they were a tobacco-based product.

“The city of Los Angeles is doing exactly the right thing by creating a local regulatory framework for e-cigarettes and other tobacco products. It is clear the number of people smoking e-cigarettes who have never smoked tobacco is increasing. This is a gateway drug.

:palm:

Liberals are never happy unless they are banning something.

Strange how it never stated in the post that they wanted to BAN e-cigs at all.

I'm not going to research Fox News because there was enough of my life wasted on trash news. My guess is they wanted to stop selling E-Cigs to children in an area or two. Fox News jumped on it saying "They are banning E-Cigs" and the sheeple with small brains followed. The Lamb of the sheep that are still new to the world are the ones repeating this trash information.

I may be wrong, but you had better have a stronger link than that before it's taken seriously. I mean, you title doesn't even match your idiot link.

Hey Blackface, the article on E-Cigs is from the LA Daily News. Your obsession with Fox News is quite comedic though.

Guess you can't read kid.

The article from Fox News was questionable because it's from fox news. The article about e-cigs STATES STRAIGHT UP THAT THEY ARE NOT BANNING E-CIGS which was the point of my post.

Jeez dude. You need to read

some people don't understand the role insects play in the natural world.

Yes some people are stupid and brick brained.

its just to sciencey for them

:rofl2:

Yes, we cannot release a few butterflies into the wild, think of the horror it would cause. Are you one of those that believes that butterflies are animals?

they didn't ban it right away huh.

they banned it when it reached a certain level which could effect the local insect population.

do you know why insects are important in an environment idiot?

Now want to talk about the butterflies or is it just too sciencey for you?
So, you don't want to talk about the "gateway to smoking real cigarettes" thing? Just the butterflies for you, eh? Tell us about butterflies, desh. I'm all ears.

damo its the people right to ban it if they wish

that is how it works.

the butterflies are far more important.

it could destroy the local flora and fauna if these release butterflies were able to rech levels large enough to complete with the local ones.

pretending this is not true is merely hating on sceince

:rofl2:

Butterflies play a part in pollinating the plants and they are also an important part of the food chain. Why do liberals hate Butterflies, when they are so important to us.

You haven't backed it up with science, you've just repeated one line of a story that you've taken at face value without the studies to back it up. It doesn't become "science" just because you repeat the word when you have yet to point out the studies behind it.

Here is an interesting take from a lepidoterologist (not a commercial one). They don't try to avoid the uncomfortable portions either, actually calling for study in areas where there is a lack.

http://butterflybreeders.org/public/health/harrypavulan.html

Unfortunately, some of the most outspoken opponents based their criticism on emotion and hypotheticals and have demonstrated what appears to be a deliberate negligence of the fact that virtually no research has been published on the purported negative effects of butterfly releases.

Storm do you really think being so fucking dishonest like that gets you anything but people thinking what a dishonest piece of shit you are?
