Authorities in the quiet Massachusetts town of Danvers were trying to determine why a beloved young math teacher was killed at the school where she taught.

A judge on Wednesday ordered Philip Chism, 14, held a murder charge. The body of Colleen Ritzer, 24, was found in woods near Danvers High School, authorities said.

Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said a search began for Ritzer, of Andover, on Tuesday after police were notified that she had not returned home from work and was not answering her cellphone.

Investigators found blood in a school bathroom and soon located her body. Blodgett would not say how she was killed.

Chism, a member of the junior varsity soccer team, also was reported missing Tuesday after failing to return home from school, Blogdett said. He was found early Wednesday.

"This is a terrible tragedy for Colleen Ritzer and for the entire Danvers community," Blodgett said.

Blodgett said Ritzer was "a very respected, loved teacher." She often used Twitter to stay in touch with her students, last tweeting geometry homework links two days ago .

Phillip Chism, 14, is accused of killing the beloved math teacher. He faced a murder charge in Salem District Court Wednesday afternoon and was held without bail. He will be tried as an adult in the case.


A source told FOX 25's Heather Hegedus that Chism admitted to police that he followed Ritzer into the women's restroom, punched her in the face and slashed her throat with a box cutter.


The source told Hegedus that Chism put Ritzer's body in a recycling bin and brought it to the woods near the school.

A 14-year-old Massachusetts boy used an object to sexually assault his popular high school algebra teacher before killing and robbing her, according to an indictment issued Thursday.

Philip Chism has been held without bail since shortly after the Oct. 22 slaying of 24-year-old Colleen Ritzer, whose body was found behind Danvers High School after she never returned home from school.


"The indictments returned today detail horrific and unspeakable acts," Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said.


The indictment says Chism, armed with a box cutter, stole Ritzer's underwear, credit cards and iPhone. A ruling on her exact cause of death is pending.
