Naked Florida man fatally shot by passing motorist after having clothes stolen

The family of a Florida man is searching for answers after he was shot by a passing motorist while running home naked because his clothes had been stolen while at the beach.

Jandei Cherry, who The Orlando Sentinel described as a 22-year-old “free-spirited musician and doting father,” had decided to run home naked last week after a friend took off with his clothes and skateboard.

Hollywood police said that somewhere along the less than 10-mile journey back to his home, a passing motorist stopped to investigate why a nude man was running down the street. Police believed that a conflict with the motorist resulted in Cherry being fatally shot.

“It is not normal for someone to be running naked down Hollywood Boulevard,” Hollywood police Lt. Osvaldo Perez explained. “I think that’s what spiked the other guy’s attention.”

Duke Laguerre, 29, told police that he passed Cherry on highway 29 and then turned around and went back to confront him. That’s when Laguerre apparently shot Cherry in the stomach, but he offered no other details about the encounter.

“The more I think about this, the more I think it makes no sense,” Cherry’s mother, Auta, told the Sentinel. “It is heartbreaking.”

“He was running naked, yes, but he had no choice. And knowing my son he would have forgiven the man who shot him.”

As of Monday, Laguerre had not been charged for shooting the 22-year-old father.

WTF??

Stand your ground again? Or is it the "encounter".. c'mon Fla. Last I heard my wonderful statehouse was having a special seession on SYG.

Really, REALLY bad law ( deadly)

Florida Senate Panel Approves 'Stand Your Ground' Revisions

If you hear the pitter patter of tiny feet, it's Florida finally taking baby steps to amend its controversial 'Stand Your Ground' law.

Tuesday a Senate panel voted 7 to 2 approving revisions to the state's self-defense law, which removed the duty to retreat from the "Castle Doctrine," granting residents the right to use deadly force in their home.

And remarkably, one of the most vocal supporters of the revisions came from one of the drafters of the original 2005 law, David Simmons (R-Altamonte Springs), who told the panel: "It is an excellent common-sense law, but it is not perfect."

The bill approved Tuesday requires local sheriffs to issue guidelines to neighborhood crime watch programs, particularly that participants are prohibited from pursuing and confronting suspects.

It also further clarifies existing language in 'Stand Your Ground' that individuals acting as aggressors are barred from using the law as a defense, and removes language so that any bystanders injured by 'Stand Your Ground' fire can pursue civil action.

Chris Smith (D-Fort Lauderdale), who co-sponsored the bill, acknowledged the small victory of the panel's approval: “Today was significant that we got something done, that we moved a comma.”

Matt Gaetz (R-Fort Walton Beach), charged with chairing the House hearing on Stand Your Ground, had previously commented that he wasn't interested in changing "one damn comma" of the law.

Tuesday's bipartisan support is Florida's first step towards fixing the problematic law that has been tied to hundreds of cases involving death or serious injury across the state.

Yet the changes approved Tuesday are a clear response to the George Zimmerman case, in which a neighborhood watch volunteer shot and killed an unarmed teen in Sanford, Fla. and was acquitted.

"Even if you think what Mr. Zimmerman did was legal, it's important to show that it wasn't appropriate," Smith said according to the Tampa Bay Times.

There are also House and Senate bills calling for a complete repeal of Stand Your Ground this legislative session.

Behold the sensitivity of two board posters responding to the senseless death of another human being.

Their level of self absorption truly boggles the mind.

The details of the confrontation of this story are missing. The guys is running naked on the sidewalk and someone turns around in his car. We have no idea if this guy stopped to see if he could help the naked man or if he stopped to harass the naked man. We don't know what happened. (other than dude getting shot of course)

I found about 50 stories of unarmed victims killed by muggers and thugs to counter your lame post, but then decided.....why bother.

How in the hell does one not stop and offer to help the guy out?

And by the way Zappie, only a dishonest liberal would tie this in with George Zimmerman. Everyone knows the primary (if not only) reason you posted this story was to fuel the anti-gun debate.
