Employment and the Minimum Wage

I'll admit that maybe there's a time or a place where people have been or can be overpaid due to excessive union power. Fast food restaurants today ain't it. The slippery slope arguments of the neocon antihumans are laughable.

I was tempted to respond but after rereading the post 4 or 5 times, I don't even know wtf your trying to say....if you fail to see the slippery slope of
illegal immigration, rampant welfare and disability fraud, half the population getting a free ride on taxes, excessive union influence in politics, the abuse
of power in government agency's, the obscene benefits the politicians vote for themselves, then there is there is no point in trying to reason with you....

neocon antihumans?...that kind of name calling is absurd...

So? Do you believe everything you read?
Yea no shit. Corporations have said that everytime the minimum wage has been adjusted for inflation all the way back to when it was first created. Guess what? It's never happened. In fact, the exact opposite has always happened due to the stimulus effect and more money being circulated into the economy.

There hasn't been a single conservative yet who has given an honest response to why the current minimum wage shouldn't be adjusted for inflation to historical levels other than that they don't believe those people working these jobs either earn or produce enough to warrant said adjustment.

To add to the discussion I saw this in an article Desh posted from The Economist on Hong Kong employing a minimum wage.

""Secondary consequences are inevitable. Miriam Lau, a Liberal member of the legislature, says that even at HK$24 an hour, the minimum wage would cost 30,000 jobs, or 1% of the workforce. At HK$32, 170,000 jobs would go, doubling unemployment. Young people and immigrants from China, who are scooped by the territory's abundant restaurants, building sites and cleaning and delivery businesses, would be the likeliest to be out of work. Such industries also employ disabled and older workers on low pay. Subsidies to support such people may have to be expanded if they lose their jobs.""

You're either niave or just believing what you want to believe. Show me the empirical data that demonstrates that to be true. Not an opinion but show me the data. All the data I've seen shows that, in fact, the opposite occurs.

The Right Wing thinks we need to compete with other Countries. Meaning, if you take a country that pays their people the least, has the least work environment standards, no age standards, no maximum hours standards (etc etc), they think we need to compete with that Country. Taking away the life style many Americans died or worked hard for. In an attempt to compete with a 3rd world Country, we would become one...

I'm torn on minimum wage. It hurts small business. But big Corporations are monopolizing industries and paying their workers breadcrumbs over minimum wage. Such as Wal-Mart. But I think that Unions could fight for higher wages at places like Wal-Mart and keep minimum wage lower so small business are more apt to hire more workers. Otherwise small business will probably cut workers and end up taking on the workload themselves. Opinion.
But the current minimum wage is already at historically low levels when adjusted for inflation. The current minimum wage is $7.25/hr. That would be $1.33/hr in 1970 dollars when the minimum wage was $1.60/hr. If adjusted for inflation the minimum wage would be around $8.70/hr.

The Right Wing thinks we need to compete with other Countries. ?.....Really ?.....Don't you ?

Its not 1492 or 1939 or whatever.....we are competing with other countries....autos, tv's, cellphones, oranges, apples and computers come from ALL OVER the world.
Do you have your head up your ass....ifs its only the right wing that thinks that, then its only the right wing that is living in todays reality.....any law that stifles
freedom is hurting someone...actually everyone.....social engineering hurts everyone...every law that limits your constitutional freedoms hurts everyone....

You clearly don't know me kid.....

I've always stated that America should hold the same standards for corporations oversea's imported as we do here in America. This would force regulation down to a common sense level but wouldn't allow IDIOTS to bring our Country down to a 3rd world Country level.

Let's see what you have to say about this kid.

I guess I'm torn on a few things. I think about my businesses I've had and how I can pay a kid that gets out of school some money to clean up or organize or paint. The kid is ignorant (not in a bad way) of what that labor is worth, but even with education they would still work that hard for gas money. In my past business I would never pay someone the current minimum wage for help when I was behind. I would do it myself. Kids will work hard for gas money (18+). But who would hire this age kids anymore on the books? Everyone does it cash now so they don't have to pay taxes. So we would probably see an increase in that.

I've also read the EXTREMEist stories about Farmers, like I was, that wouldn't allow children to work because they were too young. ........I want to edit this in saying that I never actually researched this and it could possibly be yet ANOTHER Fox News idiot lie. Kids working on the farm builds structure. Again, I don't know if this is true but I'm torn.

What is naïve about posting a quote from a politician in a country that is about to implement a minimum wage? What does my belief have to do with this? How about show any studies or data you've supposedly seen about countries that didn't have a minimum wage to implementing one.

LOL No one ever had a problem working my ass on a farm when I was a kid. I got a double hearnia helping to load hay bales in the barn when I was eleven. I always had chores as a kid up until the day we moved off the farm when I was 13.

How about ours? The point is Wacko is business men have been saying this about paying wages since the dawn of civilization. That's why you'd have to be niave to believe it.

I'm an experienced profesioal with a graduate degree in a tough discipline with over 20 years of experience in the field and I promise you the bean counters in our corporation would have no problem what so ever rationalizing paying me and my colleagues next to nothing. The only bargaining chip we have is to withold our labor. For some that is more of a bargaining chip than others.

Never worked on a farm per se.....I worked in the fields. In the summer picking tomatoes...I also worked in a packing plant that harvested green tomatoes to ship to California...by the time they got there, they were allegedly red and ready to go on grocer's. Shelves.
Oh....I did help Butcher pigs in the fall too.

Im with you on illegal immigration. It gluts the labor force driving wages down.

Can you acknowledge that big business's influence in government is even more than the unions you despise? And Im with you on abuses of government too.

After 4 or 5 reads, your response was still neutered.

And yes, tinfoil. The american car versus japanese car analogy he used sucked ass. Can you do anything but groan about it? Put up an argument. Foreign owned fast food is not vastly superior to american owned fast food.

Most Americans want a $10 hourly minimum wage

http://money.msn.com/now/post--most-americans-want-a-dollar10-hourly-minimum-wage

I personally think the minimum wage should be $15.00 an hour, but $10.00 an hour is a good start!

If you're idea if fun is doing ball busting labor sun up to sun down....you'll love farming.

Disagree. Some of the most rewarding work I've ever done was farming/ranching. I just didn't want to risk making a living doing it. I plan to return to similar work in 4 years when I retire.

An entrepreneur wrote a paper on why the minimum wage should be raised to $15. Here's a pretty good rebuttal that shows how that just won't work. However it is fun to just yell out "raise the minimum wage to X dollars" so you come across as caring and compassionate while ignoring the actual results of the action.

You can't prove anything with a Forbes article you fucking ignorant moron.

By the way, the longer you keep me on ignore, the more frequently I will point out what an ignorant moron you are.

If you do the work that some minimum wage earning kid could do for you, then
1. Your time isn't very valuable (not exactly what I would call a business) or
B. You have way too little work (not exactly what I would call a business).

Your confusion on this issue is distressing to say the least.

Perhaps you should man up and join one side or the other. ( good or evil)

If which side is which is not obvious to you, then get fucked and stop wasting everyone's time here.

I hired a couple young men - early 20s - to move a whole bunch of wood and to split the larger pieces; hard workers, I was happy to pay them $20 an hour each although technically they charged less.

My stepdaughter and b/f - wanted to do some work for us. I knew they just weren't up to the same level; they just weren't up to 7 hours of hard physical labor a day . I had them clear out a shed - while they did a great job, have to say I didn't pay them quite as much.... still more than minimum wage, though.

I really did have a point there - i.e. there are a lot of jobs I'd hire "kids" for that I would pay a lot more than minimum wage.
