The story is probably the most we'll hear about Zimmerman until his trial on a second-degree murder charge gets underway.
Leading the new details in Chris Francescani's 2,650-word feature about Zimmerman's background, his family, his career, and his prior troubles with the law, is the story about how Zimmerman came to carry a gun. It started when a neighborhood dog, a pitbull named Big Boi, cornered his wife Shellie Zimmerman in their yard in the fall of 2009. George Zimmerman bought pepper spray, but when he called Seminole County Animal Services to complain about the dog, the officer who responded had this advice for him:

"Don't use pepper spray," he told the Zimmermans, according to a friend. "It'll take two or three seconds to take effect, but a quarter second for the dog to jump you," he said.
"Get a gun."
After completing handgun training, The feature gets into more detail than any reporting yet on the climate in Zimmerman's neighborhood leading up to the night he shot Trayvon Martin in what Zimmerman says was an act of self defense. Martin was unarmed, returning to his father's girlfriend's house* from a trip to the store when Zimmerman thought he was acting suspiciously. Burglaries and vandalism abounded in the neighborhood, Francescani reported, and it's a little unsettling to read about a "series of break-ins committed by young African-American men." News reports aren't supposed to focus on suspects' races unless it's germane to the story. In a racially charged case where prosecutors allege Zimmerman "profiled" Martin, it is. "Get a gun."

I saw this posted several different times on Facebook. I didn't post this because of the trial but because it reminded me of being young and some people I grew up with. A lot of people do dumb things when they are a teenager. A lot of people look back and say "what was I thinking"? And there are some very successful people today who will tell you that at one point in their life they were headed down a very dark path until they made a change. (Of course there were kids I grew up with that were punks and thugs and never changed and are now just old punks and thugs). Yes Trayvon liked to smoke weed and fight. Not exactly traits I would encourage young people to follow yet millions of kids have gotten in fights and smoked week in their life. He was not unique that way.
This post reminded me of being 17 and remembering what I thought at the time and what my mindset was.

I then went on to graduate from Prairie View A&M University Magna Cum Laude and in two weeks I will be attending Texas A&M Health Science College of Medicine to become a medical doctor.
The picture on the right is where I am now just four years later at the age of 21. The reason I am sharing this with you is because I COULD HAVE BEEN TRAYVON MARTIN!!! The defense team could have gone onto the internet and found pictures of me that were similar to Trayvon's pictures and characterized me as a thug. They would have then portrayed me as the aggressor and as a result it lead to my death. If that would have happened, then I would not have had the opportunity to reach my true calling, which is a medical doctor. My White Coat ceremony is in four days and it marks the next step in my journey. I could have been laying in a casket with a black suit, instead of being in a white coat trying to save lives.
When I was 17, no one would have imagined that I would be doing so well and on my way to medical school. Who is to say that could not have happened to Trayvon Martin if he was still alive? He could have been the next doctor, lawyer, engineer, teacher ,etc.
My prayers go out to his family and friends.

I noted before that if we all were judged on silly stupid stuff we did as children we'd be in trouble. I sense just listening to Trayvon's mom and dad, particularly his mom, that he was a good kid, raised in a nice middle class home with a college educated mother and professional.

I was 17 a decade ago. In many ways, I was more mature than I am now. I started posting on Politics.Com and was a very civil guy. It wasn't my way to flame people or to marquee scroll the F word accross the screen. Also, I had a very good understanding of how my behavior and efforts would affect my future. So, I dressed nice and worked hard as a student. Of course, I knew my 3.0 average wasn't going to get me a free ride through college, and I actually first envisioned joing the National Guard when I was 14 prior to entering HS.
Bottom line is, I never related well to these teenage stereotypes when I was a teenager. I probably can sympathize with them better now, actually, since I can look at Trayvon with much more pity than I likely would have ten years ago. I still would have hated Zimmermann, anyway...
